Related issue: Resolves #50300

Description

This PR fixes an issue with GitOps configuration generation (fleetctl generate-gitops):

  1. Fixes fleetctl generate-gitops emits org-level windows_enabled_and_configured / android_enabled_and_configured into per-fleet YAML files #50300: Moved the emission of windows_enabled_and_configured and android_enabled_and_configured inside the global-only guard block (teamId == nil || *teamId == 0) in generateControls. This prevents org-level MDM configurations from improperly leaking into per-fleet YAML files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • GitOps configuration output now removes unnecessary empty values while preserving empty controls settings.
    • Control settings are generated consistently for all fleets, including premium global fleets.
    • Windows and Android configuration flags are included only where applicable.
    • Generated configurations now include expanded controls for platform updates, encryption, recovery, migrations, naming, identity, and device profiles.
    • Configuration generation now reports errors instead of producing incomplete control settings.

Walkthrough

fleetctl generate-gitops now emits the Windows and Android enabled/configured fields in global controls, including Free global controls and Premium unassigned controls. Regular Premium fleet controls omit these fields. The generator uses the canonical fleet.MDM JSON names. Tests cover both MDM states and the global-versus-fleet scope. Test fixtures and the changelog were updated.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c792e

The generated configuration now scopes Windows and Android MDM flags to global controls, and the team fixtures match that behavior. The change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c792e

The change aligns exported MDM settings with organization-level ownership without adding authority or weakening authorization. No introduced security issue was identified, but failure-recovery behavior was not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant authority is organization-wide Windows MDM configuration, not merely one team's output. The PR removes these global fields from regular team exports and copies existing AppConfig values into the global/unassigned export rather than introducing a new authority path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — AppConfig modification retains its write-authorization check. Incoming Android enabled/configured values are ignored in favor of the existing server-owned value, so exporting that field does not grant callers authority to change Android configuration status.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing Windows-disable path adjusts dependent settings, persists AppConfig, and then performs profile cleanup and activity recording when the value changes. Post-save failure can leave configuration persisted; repeating an unchanged value does not repeat the change-triggered cleanup branch. This behavior predates the PR, and reliable interrupted-cleanup recovery was not established.

Remove the global Windows flag from the Team A fixture.

Line 53 still contains windows_enabled_and_configured: true. generateControls emits this key only for global or unassigned fleets. Remove it from this per-fleet YAML so the fixture matches fleetctl generate-gitops and the global-only configuration contract.

Thanks for the contribution!

I would have tackled each issue on its own PR, so that each PR focuses on solving exactly one problem.

Regarding the controls inclusion in default.yml, it looks good, but if you then try to apply the changes for all YAML files at once, it fails:

Image

Note that applying JUST for global works, which is expected.

I think the issue didn't consider the scenario above, so after discussing this with the team, I think we'll want to reframe that issue so that:

  1. Scenario 1: controls not included in default.yml when the user is explicitly gitops applying default.yml ONLY -> log warning, DO NOT fail the run, and DO NOT MAKE any changes to controls.

  2. Scenario 2: controls included in both default.yml and unassigned.yaml -> running gitops apply should error out as it currently does.

  3. Do not generate controls in both default.yml AND unassigned.yaml (basically the change that is introduced in this PR).

TL;DR: I'll propose to reframe the issue around these scenarios. Can you just keep the change that solves #50300 for now?

I think we should remove the inner if checks here, otherwise if they're not set or false they won't be emitted. WDYT?

Makes sense. I will make the change

nulmete and others added 2 commits October 1, 2026 13:23
windows_enabled_and_configured and android_enabled_and_configured are
org-level settings, but generate-gitops wrote them into every per-fleet
YAML file on Premium and omitted them entirely on Free (they were only
emitted inside the Premium-only block). Emit them only for the file
holding global controls (default.yml on Free, unassigned.yml on
Premium), including when false.

Drops the always-generate-controls change from this PR so it focuses on
fleetdm#50300; that behavior is being reframed separately in fleetdm#50276.

@kitarp29 I went ahead and edited the PR description, and I'm also now only scoping the fix to #50300 as I suggested above.

mdmT := reflect.TypeFor[fleet.MDM]()
result[jsonFieldName(mdmT, "WindowsEnabledAndConfigured")] = cmd.AppConfig.MDM.WindowsEnabledAndConfigured

Isn't this a behavior change? now we are always outputting the windows_enabled_and_configured and android_enabled_and_configured settings to the YML

Yep, so I brought back the if checks that we had before in the commit below (69c023e).

Writing them as false changes the generated YAML without affecting
apply, since GitOps already treats a missing key as false.

**Related issue:** NA

Adds Fleet's November 2026 newsletter
(`articles/newsletter-2026-11.md`), which covers October 2026. It
publishes at `fleetdm.com/newsletters/newsletter-2026-11`.

- **Email subject line:** `Fleet news: November 2026`
- **Category:** `newsletter`, singular, which the website build accepts
(#52120). No website changes are needed.
- **Author:** Aube Paul (`robinedev`), matching the September and
October issues.

## Open questions for reviewers

- **New "📺 Fleet Virtual Summit" section** for the November 10 LinkedIn
Live event, placed before workshops. Keep it or fold it into the
workshops section. If it stays, it's a new entry in the newsletter's
section emoji table.
- **The roadmap preview is linked even though November isn't a quarter's
first month.** The October preview published October 13, after the
October issue went out, so readers haven't seen it in the newsletter
yet.
- **Article and guide picks are editorial**, not based on traffic
numbers. Reorder them if you have analytics. There were no case studies
in October.
- **The community section has one post, and it's personal.** Henry
Stamerjohann's MacSysAdmin talk. Fleet's company-page post about the
"Apple in the enterprise" research is another option, but it repeats the
research article in "Worth reading." No engagement numbers were
available.
- **Community contributors with five or more merged PRs in October:**
Prajwal Janbandhu (8, in the thank-you line), Michael Alt (6,
highlighted), Dhvanit (6, returning, not named), and Shreyash Agare (5,
returning, not named). Confirm none of them is a contractor whose
account isn't in the org.
- **Several first-time contributors only edited the handbook.** None
appear in Fleet's Slack, so they stay in the thank-you line.

## How each section was sourced

- **Shipped:** the Fleet 4.93.0 and 4.94.0 release articles,
cross-checked against tagged releases. The three highlights are macOS
patch notifications (Premium), Android zero-touch enrollment (Premium),
and self-service configuration profiles (not Premium), so the section
isn't all Premium. Patch releases 4.93.1 and 4.93.2 are covered by the
"See every release" link.
- **Planned:** the release planning board (view 10, filtered to
milestone 4.95.0), not the milestone fallback. There are 22 stories, all
assigned. 5.0.0 is due December 4, so November holds one release.
- **Workshops:** fleetdm.com/workshops, with the next five after the
send date.
- **Community contributions:** PRs merged in public `fleetdm` repos in
October by authors outside the `fleetdm` org, minus bots.

## Left out on purpose

- **"Windows: force standard account"** was in the planned section in
both September and October and hasn't shipped. It's not on the 4.95.0
board, so it isn't mentioned a third time.
- **Multiple versions of the same App Store app** is named in the 4.94.0
release article's title, but the article marks it as moved to 4.95. It's
listed under "Also on deck" instead of "shipped."
- **Amsterdam workshop (November 3):** past by the time this sends.
- **Fleet staff or contractors whose accounts aren't in the org:**
@TraiLynne and @thomcrowe. Both are confirmed in Fleet's Slack.
- **Other October content:** the warehouse inventory article and
Retriever guide, the PHP2Shell and eMudhra pieces, and every `industry
news` article. The routine doesn't feature that category.

## Testing

- [x] Confirmed the markdown passes the website build's metadata checks:
required meta tags, ISO `publishedOn`, description at 139 of 150
characters, `category` set to `newsletter`, H1 matching `articleTitle`,
and no Vue-template braces.
- [x] Verified all 54 fleetdm.com, GitHub, and Eventbrite links return
200. LinkedIn returns 999 to automated requests, so the profile links
come from the handbook and the post link was opened in a browser.
- [x] Checked the copy against Fleet's content style: no em dashes,
sentence-case headings, Oxford commas, and Fleet Premium labels carried
through from the release articles.
- [ ] QA'd all new/changed functionality manually
