AI: Claude Code (claude-sonnet-5[1m])

Summary

Wispr Flow's Squirrel.Mac auto-updater can't write to the app bundle when it's owned by root (the default after an MDM-pushed install), so it repeatedly prompts the user for admin credentials to fix ownership on every launch/update attempt. This is a known issue documented by Wispr Flow: Wispr Flow keeps prompting for an admin password after updates (macOS, MDM-managed Macs).

This replaces the generated install script for the macOS Wispr Flow Fleet-maintained app with a custom install_script_path (ee/maintained-apps/inputs/homebrew/scripts/wispr-flow_install.sh) that keeps the existing generated install logic and adds a post-install step assigning ownership of /Applications/Wispr Flow.app to the console user, following the same pattern already used for the Claude FMA (claude-install.sh).

Regenerated ee/maintained-apps/outputs/wispr-flow/darwin.json via:

go run cmd/maintained-apps/main.go --slug="wispr-flow/darwin" --debug

Only the install_script_ref content changed; version, queries, uninstall script, and sha256 are untouched.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Wispr Flow’s installed app is assigned to an eligible user when possible, helping its built-in updater run without repeated administrator credential prompts. If ownership cannot be changed, the installer reports that an ownership fix may still be needed.
    • If Wispr Flow is running, the installer attempts to quit it for up to 10 seconds and relaunches it after installation when an eligible user session is available.

Wispr Flow's Squirrel.Mac updater can't write to a root-owned app
bundle, so it repeatedly prompts the user for admin credentials. The
custom install script now chowns the installed bundle to the console
user after copying it into /Applications, same pattern already used
for the Claude FMA.

Walkthrough

The Wispr Flow installer now replaces the app bundle and restores the previous bundle if copying fails. It assigns ownership and write permission to an eligible user when available. It tracks whether the app was running and relaunches it when an eligible GUI user exists. The Homebrew input and Darwin output records reference the installer. A changelog entry describes the reported ownership issue.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 224d9

A failed copy could install an incomplete app, and an install between user sessions could give the wrong account write access. Ownership failures can still leave updates blocked while installation succeeds. Resolve these risks before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 90361

The change enables self-updates, but can also give a previously logged-in account write control over a shared application without confirming that account should own it. Ownership failures are not rolled back. The demonstrated exposure is local to affected Macs; execution of modified code under another user or elevated privileges has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The privileged installer can transfer recursive ownership and write authority over the shared application bundle to the last logged-in account. Account existence and non-root status establish eligibility, not authorization to control this system-wide application.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new ownership handoff is outside the replacement rollback boundary. Recursive ownership and permission failures are not checked before reporting success and attempting relaunch, so partial failure can leave an incompletely transferred bundle without restoring its prior security state.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated independently attackable asset is the shared Wispr Flow bundle on each Mac receiving this installer. A selected local account gains write authority over that asset. Wider cross-user execution, privileged-helper inheritance, and the number of deployed endpoints are not established by the available evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained finding establishes that historical login identity is accepted without authorization to own the system-wide bundle. A local attacker controlling the selected account would receive bundle write access after privileged installation, even when that account has no active GUI session. No administrator-membership check is required for the recipient. Whether modified executable contents subsequently run under another identity remains deferred.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The authority transition is from privileged installation to non-root control of a shared executable bundle. The script excludes root and validates account existence. When running as root, relaunch uses the console user's GUI session and user identity rather than launching directly as root. These controls narrow exposure but do not establish authorization for a historical owner or resolve modified-bundle launch enforcement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A failed recursive ownership or permission operation can leave mixed security state while the script reports assignment and proceeds toward relaunch. Interruption similarly has no ownership recovery path. Concurrent execution is not established; the existing replacement flow is unchanged, so its preexisting race exposure is not treated as a newly introduced finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit, durable owner-authorization policy for the shared bundle. When no authorized identity is available, defer the ownership handoff rather than treating historical login state as authorization. Align the selected owner with the intended update and launch identities.
  • proposed — Make ownership assignment a checked installation stage with a defined terminal security state and recovery behavior. Do not report success or relaunch after an incomplete handoff; address interruption and repeated execution without silently changing the authorized owner.

Ran the ownership block with stubbed `stat`/`defaults`/`id`/`sudo`
across five cases: console user, console user with `chown` failing,
`_mbsetupuser` from the `lastUserName` fallback, a real user from the
fallback, and no user. Each produced the expected command and message.
`bash -n` passes and `go test ./ee/maintained-apps/...` passes. Not run
on a real Mac.

## Summary

Applies two hardening fixes from the Wispr Flow FMA review
(#54708) to the Claude FMA's install script, which uses the
same ownership step (#51680):

- Reject `_mbsetupuser` after the `lastUserName` fallback, not only when
it's the console user, so the bundle is never assigned to the Setup
Assistant account.
- Only log that ownership was assigned when `chown` succeeds. A failure
logs a message but doesn't fail the install: the app is installed
correctly, and a root-owned bundle is the behavior before #51680.

Regenerated `ee/maintained-apps/outputs/claude/darwin.json` with `go run
./cmd/maintained-apps --slug=claude/darwin`. Only the install script ref
changed; the version, queries, and uninstall script are untouched.

`TestInstallScriptStopsWhenAppWontQuit` runs generated install scripts
(app copy and pkg) in bash with `osascript`, `sudo` and friends stubbed.
It covers an app that isn't running, one that quits, one that accepts
the quit event but keeps running, and one whose quit is canceled. The
last two must exit 1 without copying or installing anything. The test
fails against `main` and passes with this change.

I also ran each edited custom install script end to end with stubs and a
refused quit. All of them exit 1 before replacing the app, except
Harmony SASE (see below). Docker Desktop's helper was checked under its
`set -euo pipefail` for both outcomes. Not run on a real Mac.

## AI

**AI:** Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5)

## Summary

When a macOS app won't quit (for example, the user cancels a prompt to
save changes), the install script moves it aside anyway, copies the new
version in, and exits 0. fleetd then deletes `$TMPDIR`, which takes the
moved-aside bundle the app is still running from. Fleet reports the
update as installed while the user is still on the old version (#54170).

Two problems in `quit_and_track_application` caused this:
- It confirmed the quit with `pgrep -f "$bundle_id"`, which never
matches because a macOS app's command line is its executable path. So it
reported success as soon as the quit event was accepted.
- When the app was still running at the timeout, it only logged "did not
quit", and the caller carried on.

Changes:
- The helper now polls `osascript … is running` after each quit attempt
and returns 1 at the timeout. This matches the KiCad FMA (#54613). An
`is running` error doesn't count as quit.
- Generated install scripts call `quit_and_track_application '<id>' ||
exit 1` before replacing the app, for both app-copy and pkg installs.
- Custom install scripts that copy the helper get the same fix. Callers
stop the install, and Pd detaches its disk image first. Docker Desktop
already stopped on failure (it runs under `set -e`) and only needed the
`pgrep` fix. **Harmony SASE** keeps going: its pkg force-quits the app
on its own, so stopping would block an update that works today.
- The `new-fma` skill now says how custom install scripts should quit
the app and that helper copies must be kept in sync.

Behavior change: a forced patch whose app won't quit now fails, and it's
retried on the next policy run instead of being reported as installed.
The yaml-files and REST API docs describe when the install is
*attempted* ("whether or not the app is open"), which is still accurate,
so they're unchanged.

Outputs aren't regenerated here: like #43842 and #42951, the FMA bot
picks up the new script refs. The 18 frozen macOS apps keep their
current scripts until they're unfrozen.

Follow-ups (not in this PR):
- 12 custom install scripts have their own `quit_application` helper
with the same `pgrep` check and no stop on failure: 1Password, Adobe
Creative Cloud, Box Tools, ExpressVPN, Google Chrome, Grammarly, Gyazo,
Logi Tune, Microsoft Edge, P4V, Slack, Zoom. Each has its own flow, so
they need a per-script look.
- The uninstall helper `quit_application` has the same `pgrep` check.
It's left unchanged here to avoid churning every uninstall script ref.
- #53570 changes the `var_name` line of the same helper, in a separate
hunk. The Wispr Flow custom script in #54708 copies the old helper and
needs this fix after whichever merges second.

(`articles/newsletter-2026-11.md`), which covers October 2026. It
publishes at `fleetdm.com/newsletters/newsletter-2026-11`.

- **Email subject line:** `Fleet news: November 2026`
- **Category:** `newsletter`, singular, which the website build accepts
(#52120). No website changes are needed.
- **Author:** Aube Paul (`robinedev`), matching the September and
October issues.

## Open questions for reviewers

- **New "📺 Fleet Virtual Summit" section** for the November 10 LinkedIn
Live event, placed before workshops. Keep it or fold it into the
workshops section. If it stays, it's a new entry in the newsletter's
section emoji table.
- **The roadmap preview is linked even though November isn't a quarter's
first month.** The October preview published October 13, after the
October issue went out, so readers haven't seen it in the newsletter
yet.
- **Article and guide picks are editorial**, not based on traffic
numbers. Reorder them if you have analytics. There were no case studies
in October.
- **The community section has one post, and it's personal.** Henry
Stamerjohann's MacSysAdmin talk. Fleet's company-page post about the
"Apple in the enterprise" research is another option, but it repeats the
research article in "Worth reading." No engagement numbers were
available.
- **Community contributors with five or more merged PRs in October:**
Prajwal Janbandhu (8, in the thank-you line), Michael Alt (6,
highlighted), Dhvanit (6, returning, not named), and Shreyash Agare (5,
returning, not named). Confirm none of them is a contractor whose
account isn't in the org.
- **Several first-time contributors only edited the handbook.** None
appear in Fleet's Slack, so they stay in the thank-you line.

## How each section was sourced

- **Shipped:** the Fleet 4.93.0 and 4.94.0 release articles,
cross-checked against tagged releases. The three highlights are macOS
patch notifications (Premium), Android zero-touch enrollment (Premium),
and self-service configuration profiles (not Premium), so the section
isn't all Premium. Patch releases 4.93.1 and 4.93.2 are covered by the
"See every release" link.
- **Planned:** the release planning board (view 10, filtered to
milestone 4.95.0), not the milestone fallback. There are 22 stories, all
assigned. 5.0.0 is due December 4, so November holds one release.
- **Workshops:** fleetdm.com/workshops, with the next five after the
send date.
- **Community contributions:** PRs merged in public `fleetdm` repos in
October by authors outside the `fleetdm` org, minus bots.

## Left out on purpose

- **"Windows: force standard account"** was in the planned section in
both September and October and hasn't shipped. It's not on the 4.95.0
board, so it isn't mentioned a third time.
- **Multiple versions of the same App Store app** is named in the 4.94.0
release article's title, but the article marks it as moved to 4.95. It's
listed under "Also on deck" instead of "shipped."
- **Amsterdam workshop (November 3):** past by the time this sends.
- **Fleet staff or contractors whose accounts aren't in the org:**
@TraiLynne and @thomcrowe. Both are confirmed in Fleet's Slack.
- **Other October content:** the warehouse inventory article and

## Testing

- [x] Confirmed the markdown passes the website build's metadata checks:
required meta tags, ISO `publishedOn`, description at 139 of 150
characters, `category` set to `newsletter`, H1 matching `articleTitle`,
and no Vue-template braces.
- [x] Verified all 54 fleetdm.com, GitHub, and Eventbrite links return
200. LinkedIn returns 999 to automated requests, so the profile links
come from the handbook and the post link was opened in a browser.
- [x] Checked the copy against Fleet's content style: no em dashes,
sentence-case headings, Oxford commas, and Fleet Premium labels carried
through from the release articles.
- [ ] QA'd all new/changed functionality manually
