Related issue: Resolves #55077

Follow-up to #54777. The five remaining install_software errors in parsePolicyInstallSoftware (pkg/spec/gitops.go) still said "team". They now say "fleet":

  • install_software.package_path URL <url> not found on fleet: <path>
  • install_software.package_path SHA256 <sha> not found on fleet: <path>
  • install_software.hash_sha256 <sha> not found on fleet
  • install_software.app_store_id <id> not found on fleet <fleet name>
  • install_software.fleet_maintained_app_slug "<slug>" not found in software.fleet_maintained_apps for fleet <fleet name>

Checklist for submitter

See Changes files for more information.

Testing

  • Added/updated automated tests
    • Updated the existing assertions for the URL and hash_sha256 errors.
    • Added software not found on fleet errors say fleet to TestParsePolicyInstallSoftware, which covers the three errors that had no test: package SHA256, app_store_id, and fleet_maintained_app_slug.
    • go test ./pkg/spec/ passes.
  • QA'd all new/changed functionality manually

Followed the test plan from the issue against a local fleet serve --dev --dev_license, using a fleet file with an empty software: section and the five QA policies, and ran fleetctl gitops -f fleets/qa.yml --dry-run.

Before (main):

* failed to parse policy install_software "QA url": install_software.package_path URL https://example.com/a.pkg not found on team: ../software/url.yml
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA sha": install_software.package_path SHA256 aaaa1111…1111 not found on team: ../software/sha.yml
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA hash": install_software.hash_sha256 bbbb2222…2222 not found on team
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA app store": install_software.app_store_id 123 not found on team QA 55077
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA fma": install_software.fleet_maintained_app_slug "1password/darwin" not found in software.fleet_maintained_apps for team QA 55077

After (this branch):

* failed to parse policy install_software "QA url": install_software.package_path URL https://example.com/a.pkg not found on fleet: ../software/url.yml
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA sha": install_software.package_path SHA256 aaaa1111…1111 not found on fleet: ../software/sha.yml
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA hash": install_software.hash_sha256 bbbb2222…2222 not found on fleet
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA app store": install_software.app_store_id 123 not found on fleet QA 55077
* failed to parse policy install_software "QA fma": install_software.fleet_maintained_app_slug "1password/darwin" not found in software.fleet_maintained_apps for fleet QA 55077

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • GitOps installation errors now report missing software references as not found on the fleet, rather than on the team. This applies to package URLs and hashes, App Store app IDs, and Fleet-maintained app slugs, making the location described in the error messages more consistent across these software types.

Walkthrough

The GitOps install_software parser now reports missing package URLs, package SHA-256 values, App Store IDs, and Fleet-maintained app slugs as not found on the fleet. Tests check the updated wording.

Explanation

Issue #55077 requires five fleet-level install_software not-found errors in parsePolicyInstallSoftware to say "fleet" instead of "team". The whole-PR diff (merge base to head) of pkg/spec/gitops.go changes all five messages: package_path URL, package_path SHA256, bare hash_sha256, app_store_id, and fleet_maintained_app_slug. The app_store_id and slug messages still print *teamName, which holds the fleet name (for example, "QA 55077"). No changed message contains the word "team". The whole-PR diff of pkg/spec/gitops_test.go updates the existing assertions for the URL and hash_sha256 errors. It also adds TestParsePolicyInstallSoftware subtests that cover the three previously untested cases (package SHA256, app_store_id, fleet_maintained_app_slug) and assert the "fleet" wording. The issue test plan is automated-testable through parsePolicyInstallSoftware, so these tests cover the coding requirement. The PR description reports a manual dry-run with the expected five "fleet" messages. The previous reviewed head diff was unavailable, so this assessment uses the whole-PR diff, which reflects the current head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff changes only the five error format strings in pkg/spec/gitops.go and their related test expectations in pkg/spec/gitops_test.go. The test changes include one assert-to-require change on an existing ErrorContains check, which is a test-strictness change in the same test flow. All changes directly support #55077. The raw summary also reports a changes file (changes/55077-gitops-install-software-errors-fleet) for the user-visible wording change, which the issue does not require but the repository contribution rules do. That file was not read directly. No unrelated behavior or file changes appear in the reviewed evidence. The previous reviewed head diff was unavailable, so incremental changes since the prior review were verified only through the whole-PR diff. Other test files outside pkg/spec were not searched for old "not found on team" strings, so no claim is made about them.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the Policy composite literal so the test compiles.

Policy embeds fleet.BaseItem and GitOpsPolicySpec. Go does not allow promoted fields such as Name and InstallSoftware in a keyed struct literal. This causes go test ./pkg/spec/ to fail during compilation.

Initialize GitOpsPolicySpec explicitly, as in the surrounding tests.

Proposed fix

+					GitOpsPolicySpec: GitOpsPolicySpec{
+ PolicySpec: fleet.PolicySpec{Name: "missing software policy"},

This compiles: go.mod is on Go 1.27.3, which allows promoted fields in composite literals. go test ./pkg/spec/ passes locally and test-go-no-db passes in CI. The nested form was flagged by the repo's modernize linter (embedlit) in lint-incremental, so this change is the fix for that.
