Summary

On a project with guest_view_all_features=False, the issue-detail endpoint correctly returns 403 to a GUEST for issues they did not author — but the issue sub-resource endpoints did not replicate that rule. Each is decorated @allow_permission([ADMIN, MEMBER, GUEST]) and queried by issue_id only, so a restricted guest (a legitimate project member) could read data for issues they cannot view.

Fixes WEB-8353 (CWE-863). Confirmed vulnerable against origin/preview @ a8e53b6ac7 by reading the canonical code.

Affected endpoints

  • IssueAttachmentEndpoint.get — v1 .../issues/<id>/issue-attachments/
  • IssueAttachmentV2Endpoint.get — v2 /assets/v2/.../issues/<id>/attachments/ (list and single-asset download redirect)
  • IssueActivityEndpoint.get — .../issues/<id>/history/ (activity and comments)

A guest could obtain attachment metadata + download URLs, and read the activity/comment stream, for any issue in the project — including issues explicitly hidden from them by guest_view_all_features=False.

Fix

New shared helper issue_hidden_from_guest(request, slug, project_id, issue_id) in plane.app.permissions returns True when the caller is a restricted project guest (role GUEST, guest_view_all_features=False) who did not author the issue — mirroring the scope IssueViewSet.list / IssueListEndpoint already apply. Each endpoint returns 403 in that case.

Unaffected: admins, members, unrestricted guests (guest_view_all_features=True), and the guest's own issues.

Centralizing the check (as the reporter suggested) means future issue sub-resources can reuse it.

Tests

apps/api/plane/tests/contract/app/test_guest_issue_subresource_scope_app.py — 6 contract tests:

  • restricted guest blocked on a foreign issue: v1 attachments (403), v2 attachments (403), activity (403)
  • restricted guest still sees their own issue's attachments (200)
  • positive controls: full member reads foreign-issue attachments (200); unrestricted guest (guest_view_all_features=True) reads them (200)

Fail-before verified: with the fix reverted, the 3 block tests fail and the 3 positive controls pass; with the fix all 6 pass. ruff + manage.py check clean.

Review follow-up (merged with current preview):

  • The same guest check now also applies to comments (list/retrieve), comment reactions (list/create/delete), issue reactions (list), issue versions (get) and issue relations (list), and to attachment writes.
  • Ownership is checked with Issue.objects, like issue detail, so a guest's own archived, draft or triage issue stays visible.
  • The test file now has 27 tests. New ones: blocked on another user's issue for issue reactions, versions, relations and comment reactions list; allowed on the guest's own issue for the same endpoints; allowed on the guest's own archived issue for attachments, history and comments. With the code change reverted, the 7 new tests fail; with it, all 27 pass, along with the history, issue-scope, sub-resource-scope, creator-membership and attachment-size suites (87 total).

plane-ee vendors its own copy of the CE backend; an EE port will be assessed separately under Epic WEB-8293.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 50b72

The new checks block the ordinary paths by which restricted guests could access hidden issue data. A limited reaction-write path remains possible when a comment belongs to a different project from the request URL, but the examined change does not appear to introduce or widen that path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The residual reaction path requires access to a project route and knowledge of a comment ID outside that route's project. The demonstrated outcome is a reaction write, not access to the target issue's attachment or comment contents.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained authorization finding concerns a mismatched-project comment ID: the new scoped lookup finds no issue and skips the guard, while reaction creation can still save that comment ID under the URL project. Comparison with the checked-out parent shows the underlying write inputs predate this PR; the change leaves this path open rather than introducing it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For a comment resolved inside the requested project, the helper checks active guest membership, the project's visibility setting, and issue authorship before reaction creation or deletion proceeds. A failed comment lookup does not invoke that control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Reaction authorization, mutation, and activity enqueue are separate steps. The model constrains duplicate active reactions, but the inspected flow does not make the authorization decision and mutation one atomic transition; these steps were not added by this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Fail closed when the comment cannot be resolved in the requested project, and validate the comment-to-project association at mutation rather than relying solely on a conditional read-side guard.

Cover the v2 single-attachment redirect path.

These tests only exercise the collection endpoint. Add a restricted-guest request with an attachment pk and assert 403; that branch returns the presigned download redirect and is the highest-risk disclosure path.

Pull request overview

This PR closes a CWE-863 authorization gap where restricted project guests (guest_view_all_features=False) could still read issue sub-resources (attachments and activity/comments) for issues they did not author, despite issue-detail correctly returning 403.

Changes:

  • Added a shared permission helper issue_hidden_from_guest() to centralize “restricted guest can only access their own issues” logic.
  • Enforced the new restricted-guest visibility rule in issue attachment (v1/v2) and issue activity endpoints (403 when hidden).
  • Added contract tests to prevent regressions for GHSA-wq96-4xjj-j4qg across the affected endpoints.

Address review feedback on the guest issue-subresource fix:

- Attachments: apply issue_hidden_from_guest to the write paths too (v1 POST,
  v2 POST, v2 PATCH), not just GET — a restricted guest must not add/modify
  attachments on an issue they cannot view.
- v1 IssueAttachmentEndpoint.get now filters entity_type=ISSUE_ATTACHMENT,
  matching v2, so it no longer returns non-attachment issue assets.
- IssueActivityEndpoint.get binds the IssueActivity/IssueComment querysets to
  the URL project_id, preventing cross-project reads via a mismatched URL and
  keeping them consistent with the guest visibility check.

Tests: cover the v2 single-attachment (pk) redirect path (highest-risk
disclosure) and a guest POST to a foreign issue (403); fixed a fixture
docstring (owner is an admin). Fail-before verified on the write guard.

Constrain v2 object lookups to attachment assets.

The visibility guards are correct, but the object-level GET and PATCH lookups still fetch any FileAsset for the issue/project. A known non-attachment asset could therefore receive a download redirect or be modified through these attachment endpoints. Add entity_type=FileAsset.EntityTypeContext.ISSUE_ATTACHMENT to both lookups, matching the collection queries and v1 GET filter.

Follow-up: this PR's own description names comments as in scope for the guest-visibility fix, but that part wasn't actually wired up — a restricted guest (guest_view_all_features=False, not the issue's creator) who was correctly blocked from GET .../history/ could still call GET .../comments/ (list and retrieve) on the same hidden issue and read all comment content. CommentReactionViewSet had the same gap for create/destroy (lower severity — leaks reaction metadata, keyed by comment_id with no issue-visibility check).

Pushed a fix that reuses the same issue_hidden_from_guest helper already wired into attachment.py/activity.py:

  • IssueCommentViewSet.list() / .retrieve() now check issue_hidden_from_guest before falling through to the default queryset-based response, mirroring the attachment/activity pattern exactly.
  • CommentReactionViewSet.create() / .destroy() only receive comment_id in the URL (not issue_id), so these resolve the parent issue via IssueComment first, then apply the identical guard.

Added 8 new contract tests to the existing test_guest_issue_subresource_scope_app.py (same fixtures/pattern as the existing attachment/activity coverage): restricted guest blocked on comment list/retrieve/reaction-create/reaction-destroy for a foreign issue, allowed on their own issue, and unaffected for full members / guest_view_all_features=True. Full target suite (comment or guest, 30 tests) passes; ran the broader plane/tests suite too — 503 passed, 8 unrelated failures in test_authentication.py (magic-link rate-limit 429s from running the full suite together, untouched by this change).

…ts + activity (GHSA-wq96-4xjj-j4qg)

On a project with guest_view_all_features=False, issue-detail correctly 403s a
GUEST for issues they did not author, but the issue sub-resource endpoints did
not replicate that restriction. Each is decorated
@allow_permission([ADMIN, MEMBER, GUEST]) and queried by issue_id only, so a
restricted guest (a legitimate project member) could list attachment metadata /
download URLs and read activity + comments of issues they cannot view:

- IssueAttachmentEndpoint.get       (v1 issue-attachments)
- IssueAttachmentV2Endpoint.get     (v2 assets attachments, list + single)
- IssueActivityEndpoint.get         (history: activity + comments)

Add a shared helper `issue_hidden_from_guest` (plane.app.permissions) that
returns True when the caller is a restricted project guest who did not author
the issue, mirroring the scope IssueViewSet.list / IssueListEndpoint apply.
Each endpoint returns 403 in that case. Admins, members, unrestricted guests,
and the guest's own issues are unaffected.

Adds 6 contract tests (3 block, 3 positive controls); fail-before verified.

…s + scope activity to project (Copilot/CodeRabbit #9467)

* [INFRA-1174] fix(security): scope project stats and grouping keys

Project stats follow the project list visibility rules, the advance analytics overview
counts members only of the caller's projects in the workspace, and workspace-level issue
grouping builds project/state/cycle/module/label keys from the caller's projects.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1174] fix(security): address review feedback

- issue_group_values raises ValueError when called with neither project_id nor user
- Add a unit test for it

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1174] fix(security): address review feedback

- Public board grouping (space issue_group_values) takes project, state, label,
  cycle and module keys only from the board's project.
- Test: public issues endpoint grouped by project/state/cycle returns only keys
  from the board's project.

…n see (#10066)

* [INFRA-1163] fix(security): scope favorites to entities the caller can see

Favorite creation now requires the entity to be in the URL workspace/project and
visible to the caller; entity_data resolves under the same rule (get_favorite_entities).
Covers INFRA-1163, INFRA-1170, INFRA-1172, INFRA-1185, INFRA-1186.

* [INFRA-1163] fix(security): address review

Resolve workspace view favorites via workspace membership and report the favorite's project for multi-project pages.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1163] fix(security): address review feedback

- Favorite PATCH only accepts name, sequence and parent, so the favorited entity can't be changed after creation
- Add a test that PATCHing entity_type/entity_identifier leaves the row unchanged while sequence still updates

* [INFRA-1149] fix(security): apply entity role rules to asset changes

Confirm, update and delete on the generic asset routes now follow the rule of
the asset's entity: workspace admin for the logo, project admin for the cover,
project admin or uploader for attachments, member or uploader otherwise (INFRA-1149, INFRA-1197).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1149] fix(security): address review

Rename asset role tests after the permission rule each one covers.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1149] fix(security): address review feedback

- Asset restore applies the same role rule as update/delete (can_modify_asset)
- Add a test: a project guest can't restore another user's deleted attachment, the uploader can
- Tests assign the response before asserting on its status instead of making requests inside assert

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1149] fix(security): address review feedback

- The legacy asset delete and restore routes (by asset path) apply
  can_modify_asset, like the v2 routes.
- can_modify_asset: the uploader shortcut requires an active role in the
  asset's project, if it has one.
- Tests: legacy delete/restore follow the role rules; an uploader with an
  inactive project membership cannot delete or restore.

Add validate_oauth_state, which pops the session state and accepts the
callback only when both values are non-empty and match (constant time).

* [INFRA-1158] fix(security): address review feedback

- validate_oauth_state compares first and removes the stored state only on a match, so a mismatched callback no longer drops a pending login's state
- Test: a mismatched callback followed by the matching one logs in
- Add the app GitLab and Google callbacks to the state test matrix
- Compare the parsed scheme and host in the app-host redirect test

… app (#10070)

* [INFRA-1180] fix(security): bring v1 API permissions in line with the app

v1 cycle delete is limited to project admins or the cycle creator, and a cycle
update without owned_by keeps the current owner. v1 label writes require
project admin. v1 project-member add requires an active workspace membership.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1180] fix(security): address review

Check the target's active workspace membership on every member PATCH, and keep an explicit null cycle owner assigning the requester.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1180] fix(security): address review feedback

- ProjectAdminPermission (both copies) now also admits a workspace admin
  who is a project member at any role, matching allow_permission.
- v1 cycle delete reuses ProjectAdminPermission for its admin check.
- Tests: a workspace admin with project role member can create labels and
  delete cycles; one outside the project cannot create labels.

* [INFRA-1165] fix(security): reset role when rejoining a public project

Self-joining a public project reactivated an inactive ProjectMember row with
its previous role. Reactivation now sets the workspace role a new joiner gets,

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1165] fix(security): address review feedback

- Rejoin reactivation now also sets updated_by and updated_at, since

Review against current preview (6c16585)

A few changes suggested.

  1. major apps/api/plane/app/permissions/base.py:117: The issue_hidden_from_guest helper looks up ownership with Issue.issue_objects, which excludes archived, draft and triage issues. A restricted guest's own archived issue is therefore treated as hidden and gets 403 on its attachments, history and comments, although issue detail can show it. Suggest using Issue.objects for the ownership lookup and adding a test with an archived own issue.
  2. major apps/api/plane/app/views/issue/comment.py:212: Reaction create/delete are covered, but CommentReactionViewSet.list doesn't apply the parent-issue guest visibility check. Suggest applying it and adding a test that fails without it.
  3. major apps/api/plane/app/permissions/base.py:91: The same guest visibility check isn't applied to sibling read endpoints: IssueVersionEndpoint.get, IssueReactionViewSet.list and IssueRelationViewSet.list. Suggest applying it there with tests.
  4. minor apps/api/plane/app/views/issue/attachment.py:41: Preview already contains overlapping changes from #10050, #10051, #10058 and #10063 in these files. Rebase and preserve their URL issue binding, project membership and comment field restrictions alongside this change.
  5. minor apps/api/plane/tests/contract/app/test_guest_issue_subresource_scope_app.py:7: Suggest rewording the module docstring to state the visibility rule being enforced rather than describing the prior gap.

* [INFRA-1195] fix(security): verify Redis TLS certificates by default

rediss:// connections (redis_instance and the django-redis cache) now verify the
server certificate and hostname. REDIS_SSL_CA_CERTS sets a custom CA bundle and
REDIS_SSL_CERT_REQS=none turns verification off. Also covers INFRA-1210.

* [INFRA-1195] fix(security): address review

Honour ssl_cert_reqs from REDIS_URL when deciding hostname checks, and document mounting a custom CA bundle.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1195] fix(security): address review feedback

- AIO: document REDIS_SSL_CERT_REQS and REDIS_SSL_CA_CERTS in
  variables.env and the README, including a -v mount for the CA bundle.
- AIO start.sh: pass both through from the container environment, so
  -e values are not replaced by the plane.env defaults.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1195] fix(security): address review feedback

- REDIS_SSL_CERT_REQS=optional keeps hostname checking on; only none turns it off.
- Tests: mapping for optional expects ssl_check_hostname=True, and a connection
  built with optional has check_hostname=True.

* [INFRA-1160] fix(security): generate object-storage credentials per install

install.sh/swarm.sh generate random MinIO credentials on install and replace the
template placeholders on upgrade; the CLI compose no longer falls back to them.
setup.sh generates the pair for source builds, and settings drop the fallback and
log a critical warning when MinIO runs with the placeholder pair.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [INFRA-1160] fix(security): address review feedback

- The API warns when AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY is the template value,
  whatever the access key is.
- install.sh and swarm.sh rotate whenever the secret is the template value
  (or empty), and ignore quotes from older templates when comparing.
- docker-compose.yml keeps the access-key/secret-key fallbacks for MinIO and
  the API, so installs upgraded with an older setup.sh, or with blank keys,
  still start; the API warning covers them.
- README: download the latest setup.sh before upgrading.
- Test: custom access key with the template secret logs the warning.

* [INFRA-1189] fix(security): address review feedback

- NUM_PROXIES accepts at most 3 digits, so an oversized value is ignored
  with a warning instead of failing settings load.
- variables.env ships NUM_PROXIES= uncommented, so an upgrade keeps an
  operator's value; an empty value is still treated as unset.
- README: "leaving NUM_PROXIES empty" matches the shipped template.
- Test: a 5000-digit value keeps DRF's default.
