Description

Fixes #10113

Problem

In apps/api/plane/app/views/issue/relation.py, IssueRelationViewSet.list scopes the URL issue via issue_in_project and checks issue_hidden_from_guest. However, when fetching the related issues, queryset = Issue.issue_objects.filter(workspace__slug=slug)... did not apply project membership or guest visibility filtering.

As a result:

  • When relations span across projects, a guest or project member could see full work item details (name, priority, state, assignees, labels, etc.) for related issues in sibling projects where they are not an active member.
  • Restricted guests (ROLE.GUEST on projects with guest_view_all_features=False) could see related issues created by other members that are otherwise hidden from them.

Solution

  1. Centralize visible_issue_q:
    Exported visible_issue_q(user) in plane.app.permissions so both app and API views share the canonical issue visibility filter across projects.
  2. Filter Relation List Queryset:
    In IssueRelationViewSet.list (apps/api/plane/app/views/issue/relation.py), filtered queryset with .filter(visible_issue_q(request.user)). Any related issue the caller does not have permission to view is excluded from the relation lists (blocking, blocked_by, duplicate, relates_to, start_after, start_before, finish_after, finish_before).
  3. Contract Tests:
    • Added test_guest_relation_list_enforces_project_and_guest_visibility in apps/api/plane/tests/contract/app/test_guest_issue_subresource_scope_app.py verifying that:
      • Restricted guests only see their own related issues.
      • Foreign issues in restricted projects and issues in unjoined sibling projects are excluded.
      • Project admins/members see all related issues.
      • When guest_view_all_features=True, in-project foreign issues become visible while unauthorized sibling project issues remain excluded.
    • Added test_relation_list_excludes_related_issues_from_unjoined_projects in apps/api/plane/tests/contract/app/test_issue_subresource_scope_app.py.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Issue relations now respect project membership and guest visibility settings.
    • Restricted guests see only related issues they created; guests with broader project access and project members see related issues allowed by their access.
    • Issues from projects where the viewer is not a member are excluded from relation lists.

Walkthrough

The pull request moves visible_issue_q into the shared permissions module and applies it to related-issue results. Contract tests cover guest visibility settings, project membership, and related issues in sibling projects.

Changes: Related issue visibility

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#10113] requires project access checks before returning linked issue objects. visible_issue_q(user) in apps/api/plane/app/permissions/base.py allows active non-guest members, unrestricted guests, and restricted guests' own issues. IssueRelationViewSet.list applies this filter to the queryset used by all relation response lists. The added contract tests cover restricted guests, unrestricted guests, project members, and unjoined projects.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#10113]. They centralize the existing visibility query, apply it to relation listing, and add contract coverage. The small formatting changes in the guest contract test do not add unrelated behavior.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 6 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Follow-up Comments

Major follow-up Filter related issues by visibility in create().

142-142: Major · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Filter related issues by visibility in create().

create() binds the URL issue to the URL project. The body issues query uses only workspace scope, so it does not check whether the caller can view those issues. An active Admin or Member of the URL project can post the ID of an issue in a project they cannot view. The relation is created, and the response returns that issue's name, priority, state_id, sequence_id, and project_id. The list endpoint now filters related issues with visible_issue_q(request.user). This create path does not.

Apply the same filter to the body query. Relations to visible issues, including cross-project relations, are unchanged. Inaccessible and nonexistent IDs both drop out of the response.

Suggested fix
         issues = list(
             Issue.issue_objects.filter(
+                visible_issue_q(request.user),
                 workspace__slug=slug,
                 pk__in=issues,
             ).values_list("id", flat=True)
         )

This issue predates the PR. The base commit has the same unfiltered query, and this PR does not change the create path.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base b98e1defb0e0); the change keeps it reachable.

Nitpick Cover an inactive project membership in the relation-list test.

505-511: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Cover an inactive project membership in the relation-list test.

The new test test_relation_list_excludes_related_issues_from_unjoined_projects covers only a caller with no ProjectMember row in the related issue's project. Membership removal keeps the row and sets is_active=False. The test does not create that row. A change that drops the is_active=True checks in visible_issue_q would leave this test passing.

Add a case that keeps the caller's membership in the sibling project and sets is_active=False. Assert that the related issue is excluded from blocking.

The current code excludes inactive memberships. This is a regression-coverage gap, not a present defect.

Nitpick Cover the membership requirement for guest-authored issues in unjoined projects.

413-413: Trivial · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Cover the membership requirement for guest-authored issues in unjoined projects.

The guest relation-list test never creates an issue that the guest authored in a project the guest does not join. Its sibling issue is authored by create_user, so the created_by branch of visible_issue_q is never matched. A regression that removes the membership requirement from that branch would still pass. The unjoined-project test in test_issue_subresource_scope_app.py does not cover this case either, because its sibling issue has no creator set and the caller is not its author.

Add a sibling issue authored by guest and relate it to own_issue. The existing blocking_ids assertions then check that this issue stays hidden.
