Fix panic in fleetctl when live query websocket disconnects (#57606) - #57671
Changes file added for user-visible changes in changes/, orbit/changes/ or ee/fleetd-chrome/changes.
See Changes files for more information.
Input data is properly validated, SELECT * is avoided, SQL injection is prevented (using placeholders for values in statements), JS inline code is prevented especially for url redirects, and untrusted data interpolated into shell scripts/commands is validated against shell metacharacters.
Timeouts are implemented and retries are limited to avoid infinite loops
Testing
Added/updated automated tests
QA'd all new/changed functionality manually

Problem
When a live query campaign or report is deleted (or the Fleet server closes the websocket connection) while fleetctl report or fleetctl query is running:
conn.ReadJSON(&msg) in LiveQueryWithContext (server/service/client_live_query.go) returns an error (such as websocket: close 1006 (abnormal closure): unexpected EOF).
Previously, the reader loop only exited if errors. Is(err, websocket.ErrCloseSent) { return }. For any remote closure or network EOF, the loop fell through to switch msg.Type (unknown msg type ) and invoked conn.ReadJSON(&msg) again on the failed Gorilla websocket connection until Gorilla panicked with panic: repeated read on failed websocket connection.
Additionally, doneReadingChan was unbuffered (leaking the reader goroutine if ctx.Done() fired first), and cmd/fleetctl/fleetctl/query.go had no signal when the underlying websocket stream terminated.
Solution
Buffer doneReadingChan (make(chan error, 1)), guard sending the terminal error with select { case resHandler.errors <- ...: case <-ctx.Done(): }, and return immediately from the read loop upon any conn.ReadJSON error.
Expose Done() <-chan struct{} on LiveQueryResultsHandler (closed when the websocket reader goroutine exits) and handle <-res.Done() in cmd/fleetctl/fleetctl/query.go so fleetctl stops the spinner and exits gracefully after reporting the error.
Add TestLiveQueryConnectionCloseDoesNotPanic in server/service/client_live_query_test.go and changes entry changes/57606-live-query-ws-disconnect-panic.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed a panic that could occur if a report was deleted or the connection was lost while running fleetctl report or fleetctl query.
Live-query commands now stop cleanly when the connection closes and display available errors instead of hanging or crashing.
fleetctl report now reports an error if the connection closes before enough results are available. It succeeds only when results meet the requirements for the selected options.
…57606)
Terminate the LiveQueryWithContext websocket read loop immediately on any conn.ReadJSON error, buffer doneReadingChan to prevent goroutine leaks, and signal stream closure via Done() so fleetctl report/query exits gracefully when a report is deleted or the server disconnects.

Signed-off-by: duongynhi000005-oss <duongynhi000005@gmail.com>
The live-query handler exposes a completion channel and reports WebSocket read errors without blocking. When the result stream closes, the fleetctl query loop stops the spinner, prints queued errors, and checks whether the report completed before returning. Tests cover WebSocket disconnection and completion when the caller does not drain errors. The changelog describes a panic fix during report deletion or connection loss.

Explanation
The title names the fix (a panic in fleetctl) and its trigger (the live query websocket disconnecting). The changeset does exactly that: it makes the reader return on any ReadJSON error, buffers doneReadingChan, and adds Done() so fleetctl exits gracefully. The title is specific and matches the main change. The PR number in the title is a minor issue, but it does not affect the verdict. The objectives also reference PR #57671 while the title cites #57606, which is a discrepancy in references only.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links the related issue (Resolves #57606), ticks the changes-file, validation, timeout, and testing items, and includes the required AI section. It explains the problem, the cause, and the solution, and it names the new test and changes file. Several template items are left unchecked or absent, including the frontend, database migration, Apple MDM, GitOps, and fleetd sections. These do not apply to this change, and the template allows non-applicable sections to be removed. The 'QA'd all new/changed functionality manually' box is checked, but no manual QA steps or results are described. Adding those details would strengthen the description.

Explanation
Issue #57606 requires fleetctl to exit gracefully when the live-query websocket closes. server/service/client_live_query.go now returns after any ReadJSON error, buffers error delivery, and closes Done(). cmd/fleetctl/fleetctl/query.go stops the spinner, reports queued errors, and returns a controlled result or error when the stream ends. The added tests cover websocket closure and completion without consuming the error channel. The changes entry documents the fix.

Guard every result and error send in the reader goroutine with ctx.Done().
When ctx is cancelled while the reader blocks on an unguarded send, the goroutine never returns. Then done is never closed and conn is never closed. Only the read-error send checks ctx.Done(). Wrap the sends at lines 167, 169, 174, 181, 190, and 193 in a select with case <-ctx.Done(): return. Callers that cancel and then wait on Done() hang.

Review comment at @server/service/client_live_query.go at line 136:
Guard every result and error send in the reader goroutine with a select on
ctx.Done(), returning when the context is cancelled. Apply this to all send
paths, not only the existing read-error path, so cancellation lets the goroutine
exit and run its deferred cleanup, including closing resHandler.done.
Cover cancellation while a websocket read is pending.
The new test closes the connection from the server. The client then fails through the doneReadingChan error branch, so the test never cancels the context while ReadJSON is pending. An unbuffered doneReadingChan passes this test. The error branch receives from the channel, so the per-read goroutine's send still completes.
A regression appears only when the context ends first, while a read is pending. In that case the per-read goroutine blocks on its send after the connection closes. Add a case that cancels the context during a pending read and checks that the per-read goroutine exits. The done channel does not cover this, because it closes when the outer goroutine returns and does not wait for the per-read goroutine. Asserting the exit needs a goroutine-leak check or another exit signal.

Extend the websocket cancellation test around the `res.Errors()` and
`res.Done()` checks to cancel the context while `ReadJSON` is still pending,
then verify the per-read goroutine exits using a leak check or an explicit exit
signal. Do not rely on `res.Done()` alone, since it only confirms the outer
goroutine returned.

Use t.Context() for the new test's context.
TestLiveQueryConnectionCloseDoesNotPanic creates its timeout context from context.Background(). The repository testing convention requires t.Context(). Changing the parent context has no behavioral effect here, because the test already defers cancel().
Based on coding guidelines, the Go testing convention states: "Use t.Context() instead of context.Background()." This applies to server/**/*.go.

Make result delivery cancellation-aware.
If a caller stops reading Results() while a result is pending, this send blocks. Canceling ctx cannot unblock it, so Done() never closes and the connection remains open. The new Done() contract promises notification when the stream terminates. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Select on ctx.Done() when sending results. Apply the same cancellation handling to the blocking error sends.
Based on learnings: channel sends should select on cancellation to avoid parked goroutines.
