Checklist for submitter

  • Input data is properly validated, SELECT * is avoided, SQL injection is prevented (using placeholders for values in statements), JS inline code is prevented especially for url redirects, and untrusted data interpolated into shell scripts/commands is validated against shell metacharacters.
  • If paths of existing endpoints are modified without backwards compatibility, checked the frontend/CLI for any necessary changes
    • The PATCH response now uses the version shape. The frontend doesn't read it. POST of an app already on the fleet now returns 409 instead of updating it.

Testing

  • Added/updated automated tests

  • Where appropriate, automated tests simulate multiple hosts and test for host isolation (updates to one hosts's records do not affect another)

  • QA'd all new/changed functionality manually

    • Exercised every endpoint against a local server, plus 120 random add, rename, edit, and delete requests with no 5xx.
    • Installed on a real iPhone with two versions on the title: the install carried the first-added version's configuration and counted under that version.

Summary

(ai generated)

App Store app versions over the REST API, following #53320 (REST API) and #53318 (audit log).

  • GET /software/titles/:id returns app_store_apps, one entry per version, first-added first, each with its own status counts, labels, categories, self-service, auto-update window, and configuration. app_store_app stays and holds the first-added version. Without a fleet, neither field is returned.
  • POST /software/app_store_apps accepts name (default "Default version") and returns the new version_id. A duplicate name (ignoring case) or a second macOS version returns 409, an 11th version returns 400, and names over 255 characters return 422.
  • PATCH /software/titles/:id/app_store_app accepts version_id (required with more than one version) and name, and edits only that version, including its auto-update window. The response uses the version shape from the docs.
  • DELETE /software/titles/:id/available_for_install accepts version_id. The display name and icon are deleted with the last version. Deleting an Android version skips the uninstall on hosts another version still covers.
  • The added, edited, deleted, and installed App Store app activities carry version_name.
  • Installs read the first-added version's configuration on iOS and Android until per-host precedence lands in App Store app versions: install-time precedence, setup experience, per-version status, and re-delivery on edit #53639.

Left for later sub-tasks: per-host version precedence, re-sending configuration on delete, and per-version auto-update in the cron (#53639), GitOps versions (#53640), UI (#53641). version_id on the POST response still needs documenting.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • App Store apps can now have multiple named versions per fleet, with version-specific settings and configuration.
    • Add, edit, and delete specific versions; omitting a version when deleting removes all versions for the title.
    • Software title details now include the fleet’s App Store app versions.
    • App Store activity records include version names.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Android app uninstalls preserve hosts targeted by another remaining version.
    • Version-specific configuration and app deletion now target the selected version.

Review in Change Stack →

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

The change adds named App Store app versions with version-specific API, datastore, and deletion operations. Software-title responses expose the versions in creation order and retain the first version in the existing field. Add, edit, delete, and install activities can include a version name. Android configuration and uninstall handling now account for version selection.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa545

Editing an App Store app version while another admin deletes it could, in a rare race, bring the deleted version back. Consider switching to an UPDATE by ID with a row-count check before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to aa545

Team authorization and version ownership checks are preserved. However, Android configuration delivery does not consistently follow the selected version, and failed creation requests can leave saved versions without completing device provisioning. These gaps can cause managed security settings to diverge from the intended configuration.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The newly reachable Android multi-version lifecycle lacks consistent host-scoped configuration ownership. Bulk provisioning selects the earliest version in the fleet regardless of that version's label scope, while version-specific add/edit jobs deliver their own configuration. Deleting a version excludes hosts covered by another version from uninstall but does not send the remaining version's configuration. Consequently, device settings can depend on the provisioning path or retain a retired configuration, including credential-provider and work-profile-widget settings.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Creation persists the version before enqueueing Android provisioning. If enqueueing fails, the request returns an error after durable state changed; repeating the request now fails the duplicate-name check rather than replaying provisioning. This worsens recovery compared with the supplied previous update-on-POST behavior and can leave saved configuration without its required device-policy job. No compensating recovery was established in the examined paths.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined mutation paths require write permission for the selected fleet. The configuration-ownership concern affects Android hosts reached by that fleet's app versions and provisioning paths; it does not establish cross-fleet access or a new credential authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An authorized writer can create differently scoped versions with different configurations. A host-oriented provisioning path can then select the fleet's earliest configuration rather than the host's applicable version, while a version-specific job applies that version's settings. The resulting control drift can affect managed configuration, widget exposure, and credential-provider policy; no unauthorized exploitation was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Deletion authorizes the requested fleet, selects versions through a fleet/title-scoped read, and rejects a version ID outside that set. The destructive query repeats fleet, app, platform, and exact version predicates.
  • observed — Software-title responses retain inventory authorization and visibility filtering. Callers without installer-read permission have configuration removed from both the compatibility app entry and every new version entry.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Worker retry handling supports failures after a provisioning job exists, but cannot repair an enqueue failure by itself. Combined with post-commit creation and duplicate-name rejection, recovery requires another established mechanism or an explicit operator action.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use one host-scoped effective-version resolver for provisioning, edits, deletion handoff, and reconciliation. Gate multi-version Android use until these paths agree on ownership and overlapping-scope precedence.
  • proposed — Persist provisioning intent with the version mutation, or provide explicit idempotent recovery that can replay incomplete provisioning without creating another version or overwriting a completed one.

Explanation

Issue #53638 requires a maximum of 10 versions and a second-macOS-version conflict in both AddAppStoreApp and BatchAssociateVPPApps. The PR adds these checks to AddAppStoreApp, but BatchAssociateVPPApps still contains a TODO to add these checks later. The PR adds API, activity, Fleet Free, version-isolation, deletion, and first-version installation tests, but it does not establish compliance with the batch-path limit and macOS conflict requirement.

Resolution

Add the 10-version and second-macOS-version validations to BatchAssociateVPPApps. Add integration tests for both batch rejection cases. Keep the existing duplicate-name, selected-version, activity, license-gate, and deletion behavior covered.

Update existing VPP app-team rows by ID.

insertVPPAppTeams passes existingVPPAppTeamID into an INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE statement. If another transaction deletes that row before this statement runs, the primary-key conflict is gone, so the statement can insert a replacement row with the same ID. The function then returns the supplied ID without checking whether the original row was updated.

Use UPDATE ... WHERE id = ? for an existing ID and treat zero affected rows as a not-found or conflict error. If the service performs an existence check instead, lock the row in the same transaction.

Seems not worth making this change IMO, it sounds like the worst case scenario would just be that the app comes back? At least this might be out of scope for this PR.

Hypothetical fix could be this:

 	// Write the maintenance window only when automatic updates are turned on, the update skips empty times
 	var startTime, endTime string
 	if ptr.ValOrZero(appID.AutoUpdateEnabled) {
 		startTime = ptr.ValOrZero(appID.AutoUpdateStartTime)
 		endTime = ptr.ValOrZero(appID.AutoUpdateEndTime)
 	}

+	if existingVPPAppTeamID != nil {
+ // Lock the edited version so a delete waits for this transaction, otherwise the upsert would add a deleted version back under its old id
+		var lockedVPPAppTeamID uint
+		err := sqlx.GetContext(ctx, tx, &lockedVPPAppTeamID, `SELECT id FROM vpp_apps_teams WHERE id = ? FOR UPDATE`, *existingVPPAppTeamID)

Won't hosts on a later version get the first version's config the next time they sync? Seems like this only reads the oldest version's config for each app; I think iOS installs read it the same way.

Yes, I was planning to fix this when working on #53639 because it seemed more appropriate there. I forgot to mention that all the TODO's are for me when working on the next subtask.

Could adding "Bêta" next to "Beta" overwrite Beta instead of returning a 409? The name check is case-insensitive in Go, but MySQL also ignores accents, so the insert upserts into the existing version.
