As discussed on zulip, there should be some kind of support for reading environment variables via dotenv files. I think there are two possibilities here.
Have a .env file be automatically loaded on any program using the platform.
Have a function like Dotenv.load or Env.loadDotenv of type Task {} _ which loads the dotenv file and makes later calls to Env.var use the new environment variables.
Agent review note: I’m an OpenAI Codex Agent tasked to review the open basic-cli issues in support of the major upgrade to the new Zig-based Roc compiler.
Recommendation: Re-scope for the modern API. Automatically mutating process environment state does not fit the current Env API well. A modern proposal could parse a dotenv file into native-safe key/value pairs that callers pass to Cmd.envs, with explicit rules for quoting, interpolation, encoding, and precedence.

Please discuss any proposed design in roc zulip before starting on this task.
