feat(situ,test-gate): start the caller walk from the changed symbols, not the changed files - #423
Conversation
… not the changed files Problem. --situ and --test-gate started the caller walk from every symbol of every changed file. A small edit in a large shared file gave a very large answer (field report redhat-et#302). Change. One `git diff -U0 HEAD` runs for the whole tree. A function or method is a start symbol when a hunk overlaps its body. A hunk that no function body holds sends its whole file back to the old file-level treatment. With no hunk evidence the result equals the old result. The report names the treatment it used. Measured on two public repositories, one edit each. django, 3-line edit in QuerySet.exists(): 4,748 to 282 symbols, 323 to 56 tests. sentry, crashreports_exceeded: 11,534 to 3,036 symbols, 1,333 to 385 tests. Gates. test/situhunkcheck.sh and test/testgatehunkcheck.sh are new and listed in test/regression.sh (700 to 702). listingpagingcheck and testrowruncheck now edit at module level, so their fixtures stay file-level. The hunk parser moves from quality.h to diffhunks.h, and both users share it. Co-Authored-By: Qwen3.8 Max <noreply@qwen.ai> Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

Shared diff-hunk collection src/diffhunks.h, src/quality.h |
A shared API parses Git diff hunks and collects them by path. Quality analysis now uses the shared per-path hunk APIs. |
Change-set computation and reporting src/situ.h, src/mcpverbs.h, src/compactlegend.h, src/verbs_change.h |
Situational-awareness and test-gate analysis use shared change-set computation. Hunk evidence narrows seeds when hunks overlap function or method bodies; otherwise, analysis retains file-level treatment. Reports expose change-set statistics, with test-gate fields and legends conditional on hunk evidence shaping the result. |

Integration tests cover narrowing, fallback cases, MCP parity, output formats, and determinism. Existing fixtures and the gate roster are updated. Documentation and presentation references report the revised gate count and change-set fields. |

Symbol-level narrowing can omit callers and tests that a change affects. This happens with explicit file selectors on dirty files, with hunks that mix function-body and module-level edits, and when git diff fails partway. --test-gate can then miss obligations and report success. Fix these before merging.

- Around line 707-713: Update the hunk-location logic around hStart, hEnd, and
any so a hunk is marked located only when every relevant new-side line is
covered by the union of locatable body spans. Read the working-tree file to
ignore blank or comment-only lines outside those spans, while treating any
non-blank, non-comment line outside the union as unlocated so file-granular
fallback is preserved. Keep overlapping-span handling and markLocal updates for
fully covered hunks unchanged.
- Around line 630-632: Update computeSymbolChangeSet and its callers to receive
the mask source, and invoke gitDiffHunksAllVsHead only for masks derived from
the same working-tree diff. Preserve explicit --situ=FILES and --test-gate=FILES
masks from changedMaskFromListChecked at file granularity, without narrowing
them using unrelated working-tree hunks.

Thank you, @llvm-x86 — good to see you back after #351. Starting the caller walk from the changed symbols is exactly the fix the #302 field report needed, and the design choice that every missing-evidence case falls back to the old, larger answer makes it easy to trust. The django and sentry numbers in the description are a clear way to show it. We have started a full review today (claims, the fallback cases, the |

Thank you @llvm-x86 — this is a well-aimed change and we checked a lot of it. What we verified works the way you describe: the fallback-to-the-old-answer design holds (no git, unborn HEAD, untracked-only, module-level edits, deletions, decorators, pure renames all return the old file-level answer; 42 clean-tree

Counts: gate list unioned (707 + 2 = 709) and regenerated with docs/gatecount_build.py; the PR's CHANGELOG entry moves to changelog.d/423-situ-hunk-granularity.md (credits @llvm-x86). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The whole-tree hunk parser read any diff line starting '+++ ' as a file header. An ADDED line whose content starts
with '++ ' is '+++ ...' in the diff, so the current path was reset and every later hunk of the file was dropped
silently: a narrower answer from a parser bug. A hunk header announces its body exactly, so the parser now consumes
oldCount + newCount body lines before a '+++ ' line may be a header again. Arm (g) pins the '++ ' added line and its
'-- ' deleted twin ('--- ...') with a second hunk after them.

…orking-tree diff --situ=FILES, --test-gate=FILES and the MCP diff argument name FILES; a dirty hunk elsewhere in them says nothing about which symbols were meant. A committed edit to one function plus an unrelated dirty edit to another dropped the first one's test. Simplest honest rule: an explicit list is the pre-PR file-level answer, with no git spawn and no new attribute. computeSymbolChangeSet, computeSituationFacts and computeTestGate take a narrow flag that the default-diff callers leave on. Arm (h) in both gates (CodeRabbit redhat-et#2). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A hunk that overlapped a body AND touched module-level lines (a body's last line plus a new statement right below it, or a file-wide CRLF rewrite) counted as located, and the module-level part was never seeded. Located now means every non-blank new-side line sits inside a body-bearing span; the remainder returns the file to the file-level answer (unlocated >= 1). The per-file narrowing moves out of computeSymbolChangeSet into locateHunksInFile. Arm (i) in both gates (CodeRabbit redhat-et#3). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… file-level answer Callers reach the CLASS, not a constructor, dunder or property by name, so seeding only that member walked zero callers and turned --test-gate green (exit 4 to 0) on an edit every user of the class feels. Owner-chosen honest fallback: a hunk inside a constructor/destructor/initializer, a Python dunder, a Python @Property family member or a TS/JS get/set accessor is unlocated; the file keeps the old answer and the report says granularity=file. Rust new and Go NewT are ordinary named functions that callers do name, so they still narrow (measured). Arms (j) in situhunkcheck and (g) in testgatehunkcheck: Python __init__ and @Property, TS constructor, C++ constructor. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nd generated figures A non-zero git exit (no repo, no HEAD) now makes the whole-tree hunk read 'no evidence' (change_set shows evidence=0) instead of an empty measurement (CodeRabbit redhat-et#1). The PR's CHANGELOG entry lives in changelog.d/ now, credits @llvm-x86 and states the new fallbacks. Legend dictionary figure regenerated (dictv a612d2cf, 923 entries). …y arm's fixture write isHunkLocatableKind was a fourth copy of the function-or-method test (quality-delta: new-clone-of-reused-helper); the body-bearing check now calls the one predicate forcallerhop.h already uses. The (k) boundary arm truncated its own fixture (open(p,'w') before read), which made it pass for the wrong reason on a broken fixture; it reads first now. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
computeTestGate's one defaulted narrowByDiff parameter (explicit --test-gate=FILES is never narrowed; one call site) and changeGranularityLabel's three-way label ladder, which only resembles prDirectionAttr. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ck ratchet) The Python and JS/TS accessor probes were guarded by == Lang:: tests, which pushed the shared-file predicate count over the langidentitycheck ceiling (337 > 335). Both probes are text checks that cost nothing where they do not apply and fail toward the file-level answer, so the language guard is dropped instead of moved. Thank you, @llvm-x86, for this. Starting the caller walk from the changed symbols instead of the changed files is the right design, and the django and sentry numbers show why it matters. We would like to land it, so we pushed a few commits onto your branch (maintainer edits are on) and merged current main into it. Your commits are untouched. What we changed, and why. Each point below has a failing arm in your two gates first, and the arm now passes:
What the constructor fallback costs: we measured one-line body edits on hono and starlette, four samples per kind. Ordinary methods keep your narrowing (hono: 2.8 tests on average before, 2.2 after, the same as your branch). Constructors and properties go back to the old answer: hono 3.0 and 3.5 tests where your branch said 1.2 and 1.5, starlette constructors 8.0 where your branch said 2.0. The narrower numbers were wrong, because nothing reaches those members by name. The django and sentry figures in your description come from ordinary function bodies, so they should not move; we could not re-run those two repositories here. Two things we left for later, on purpose: README and |
