Python Iinstall manager on ARM installs x86 binaries? #306

Description

@mcringbearer

python Windows install manager 26.1.msix, on Windows 11 ARM 25H2, downloaded from python.org.
Appears to install x86 Intel binaries?
(Whereas python-3.14.4-arm64.exe as expected installs ARM binaries.)

It would be nice if the install manager reported the platform and informs user what is about to be installed, and tell user if they really want ARM binaries to use the dedicated ARM install EXE, not the MSIX. There is no indication to the user that x86 will be installed.

    If you py install 3-arm64 then you'll get the latest build for ARM64.

    See #198 for status on it becoming the default.

    You can also set the default_platform configuration setting to "upgrade" yourself to ARM64 by default early.

    it doesn’t say what to set it too

    Haha, good catch! You want -arm64, to match the -arm64 (or -32 or -64) that you'd add to the usual tag.

    will this REPLACE that with ARM, or will both platform binaries exist?

    Both will exist. py -V:3 will append the default platform and use that (if it exists), and py list will indicate which platform tags are optional. You can py -V:3-64 to explicitly launch the Intel 64-bit one.
