What changed

From the data collected and changes done in #31764 this PR is introducing an helper that waits for the OAuth server Deployment to observe a new generation and finish rolling out used for have the Authentication Component Proxy tests wait for the rollout after proxy, IdP, and proxy removal changes in the authentication component proxy tests.

Additionally it raise the pathological event threshold for OperatorStatusChanged events during these tests (resulted from a test execution).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Authentication Component Proxy test coverage and validation across proxy, identity provider, fallback login, and OAuth deployment scenarios.
    • Added stricter verification that related deployments complete their rollout before tests continue.
    • Refined event handling so scaling tolerances apply only to eligible, passing tests and their configured 10-minute post-test grace periods.
    • Improved handling of deployment and operator status events during eligible test windows to provide more reliable test results.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

No changed Ginkgo test title contains dynamic data. The six g.It titles in test/extended/authentication/component_proxy.go remain static, descriptive strings, and the pull request does not add or modify It, Describe, Context, or When declarations. The new eligible-name mappings are fixed string constants, not generated test titles.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

No new Ginkgo test declarations were added. The six existing component-proxy tests remain unchanged in name and structure. The new code only waits for OAuth Deployment generations and rollout readiness, updates proxy configuration, and verifies login. It does not assume multiple nodes, node roles, pod placement, anti-affinity, failover, rescheduling, or multiple endpoints. Multiple replicas are treated as deployment status counts, which is allowed on SNO.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request changes only test code, pathological-event test support, and .gitignore. The deployment-related changes read oauth-openshift metadata and wait for rollout completion; they do not add or modify deployment manifests, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. No topology-dependent scheduling constraint is introduced.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

No OTE stdout contract violation was introduced. The changed rollout helper writes only through g.GinkgoWriter, which the check permits. The changed authentication declarations and pathological matcher setup contain no fmt.Print*, klog, os.Stdout, or log.SetOutput writes. Existing logrus calls were not added by this pull request.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS. The pull request adds no new Ginkgo test declarations. The changed e2e test bodies add Kubernetes Deployment rollout polling and use the existing in-cluster Keycloak and Squid setup. The diff adds no hardcoded IPv4 address, IPv4-only parsing, or public/external connectivity. Existing 127.0.0.1 NO_PROXY literals are unchanged.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed diff adds rollout polling, event matchers, test-name windows, and .gitignore content. It introduces no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB mode, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparisons.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only .gitignore and Go test/support code. The reviewed diff adds no container or Kubernetes manifest security settings and contains no privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation entries.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The prior sensitive-logging issue remains unresolved. The changed helper logs the raw Kubernetes Deployment Get error with %v at test/extended/authentication/operator_status_helpers.go:39-40. A client or transport error can contain an API URL or internal hostname. The helper also returns the raw error through %w at line 66, and callers render that error in Ginkgo failures. This behavior was introduced by the pull request.

Resolution

Do not log the raw Kubernetes client error. Log a fixed failure category with the namespace and deployment name, or extract only a safe Kubernetes reason. Return a sanitized timeout/error message instead of wrapping the raw Get error when the test framework can render it.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The previous assertion-message defect remains. The PR adds many bare o.Expect(err).NotTo(o.HaveOccurred()) assertions in test/extended/authentication/component_proxy.go. Examples include OAuth Deployment reads at lines 159, 176, 231, 251, 401, 423, 468, 496, 543, 561, and 580; operator waits at lines 169, 244, 261, 416, 433, 483, 508, 554, and 589; rollout waits at lines 173, 190, 248, 265, 420, 437, 487, 512, 558, 577, and 593; and namespace deletion at line 601. These cluster operations provide no diagnostic failure message.

Resolution

Add a meaningful message to every assertion introduced by this PR. Identify the operation and resource, such as failed to get oauth-openshift Deployment before proxy update, authentication operator did not settle after proxy changes, oauth-openshift rollout did not complete after IdP changes, and failed to delete Squid namespace.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The prior MicroShift incompatibility remains unresolved. The changed fallback Ginkgo test at test/extended/authentication/component_proxy.go:133-134 now calls createKeycloakUserPassword, which uses oc.AdminUserClient().UserV1() at line 623. Its cleanup accesses user.openshift.io Users, Groups, and Identities. MicroShift does not serve this API group. The enclosing Describe at line 69 has no [Skipped:MicroShift], unavailable [apigroup:...] tag, or IsMicroShiftCluster skip.

Resolution

Add [Skipped:MicroShift] to the enclosing Describe (preferred because this suite uses unavailable OpenShift APIs), or add [apigroup:user.openshift.io] to the test name. If MicroShift validation is required, run /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-microshift-release-4.22-periodics-e2e-aws-ovn-ocp-conformance-serial.

Chai test selection for 778e31003330cb4259c6d29f6e0a3513b9da072e → main

  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-1of2
  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-2of2

Reason: All changes are confined to test code and test infrastructure for the [sig-auth][Suite:openshift/conformance/serial] authentication component proxy tests: 1. .gitignore: adds mise.toml — non-functional. 2. duplicated_event_patterns.go: adds an OperatorStatusChanged pathological-event matcher gated by authenticationComponentProxyTestsDetected(finalIntervals) — this code path only activates when the serial auth proxy tests run, making it inert in parallel, upgrade, and MicroShift jobs. 3. component_proxy.go: inserts waitForDeploymentRollout calls between proxy/IdP config changes in five test functions and reorders proxy-removal verification in testFallbackOnProxyRemoval — all within [Suite:openshift/conformance/serial] tests. 4. operator_status_helpers.go: adds the waitForDeploymentRollout helper (additive, no existing code modified). Selected: the two serial conformance shards, which are the only candidates that execute the [Suite:openshift/conformance/serial] auth proxy tests where every behavioral change lives. Not selected (no changed surface exercised): - Parallel e2e jobs (e2e-aws-ovn-fips, e2e-gcp-ovn, e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6): run parallel suites; serial auth tests do not execute; the pathological event change is gated and inert. - MicroShift jobs: different platform, does not run OCP serial conformance tests. - e2e-gcp-ovn-upgrade: annotation's .*monitor.* matches the file path, but the code change is gated by authenticationComponentProxyTestsDetected which is false during upgrade tests (no auth proxy serial tests run). - CSI, Jenkins, builds, image-registry, kubevirt, image-ecosystem, upgrade-rollback, two-node, vSphere: none of these areas were touched. No production code changed; unit/lint/verify/images all passed.

21-21: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Keep monitor metadata independent of the authentication E2E package.

The monitor path does not run the imported Ginkgo specs, so this does not create test-suite execution or a current test failure. However, importing authentication still registers unused Ginkgo metadata and couples monitor code to the E2E package.

Move AuthenticationComponentProxyEligibleTestNames and AuthenticationComponentProxyPostTestGrace to a small leaf package under pkg/monitortestlibrary, and import that package from both consumers.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Update the matcher-contract tests.

NewUniversalPathologicalEventMatchers now registers the OAuth matchers unconditionally. The empty-interval test still expects the scaling matcher to be absent, and the deployment test still expects a *SimplePathologicalEventMatcher. These assertions fail when the supported go test ./pkg/... workflow runs, so the workflow exits unsuccessfully.

Keep monitor-policy data out of the authentication e2e package.

pathologicaleventlibrary imports test/extended/authentication only for monitor-policy data. The authentication package evaluates package-level g.Describe initializers, so every consumer of pathologicaleventlibrary, including its unit-test binary, also initializes and registers authentication spec metadata. This creates unnecessary e2e-package coupling, but the inspected source does not establish an import cycle, build failure, or test failure.

Move the eligibility set, grace duration, and detection function into pathologicaleventlibrary or a small leaf package under pkg/. Shared test-name prefixes are not required for this correction; treat title consolidation as a separate improvement.

  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-1of2
  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-2of2

Reason: Changed surfaces: All changes are in test infrastructure — the pathological event monitor library (pkg/monitortestlibrary/pathologicaleventlibrary/) and the [OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy][Serial] e2e tests (test/extended/authentication/). No production operator or controller code is modified. Behavioral changes from the patch lines: 1. authenticationComponentProxyTestsDetected() narrowed from strings.Contains("[OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy]") to exact name equality via sets.Set[string].Has() — detection is stricter. 2. Post-test grace window increased from 120s to 10 minutes for proximity-bounded event tolerance. 3. New OperatorStatusChanged matcher (cap 30) added alongside existing DeploymentUpdated (cap 70) and ScalingReplicaSet (cap 70). 4. All three matchers now use OverlapOtherIntervalsPathologicalEventMatcher with eligibleWindows() (previously only ScalingReplicaSet used proximity bounding; DeploymentUpdated was a flat cap). 5. Test code now explicitly waits for deployment rollouts between proxy config and IdP registration, and testFallbackOnProxyRemoval adds OIDC login verification post-removal. Selected: serial-1of2, serial-2of2 — These run [Suite:openshift/conformance/serial], the only suite that includes the [OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy][Serial] tests. If the gate is in the Default feature set, these jobs exercise both the monitor matcher changes (events evaluated post-run) and the test sequencing changes (explicit rollout waits). The two partitions together cover whichever half contains the auth proxy tests. Not selected — no changed behavior exercised: - Parallel e2e jobs (e2e-gcp-ovn, e2e-aws-ovn-fips, e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6): authenticationComponentProxyTestsDetected() returns false in parallel suites (no Serial auth proxy tests run), so all changed code paths in NewUniversalPathologicalEventMatchers are skipped. Compilation already verified by first-stage unit and images. - MicroShift jobs: MicroShift conformance does not include OCP auth component proxy tests. - CSI, Jenkins, KubeVirt, builds, image-registry, image-ecosystem, upgrade, baremetal two-node, vSphere: scoped suites with no connection to authentication monitor/test code. Coverage note: If AuthenticationComponentProxy is TechPreview-only (not in Default feature set), no candidate provides direct e2e coverage. In that case, the comprehensive unit tests in oauth_scaling_threshold_test.go (which passed in the first-stage unit job) are the primary safety net for matcher logic, and the .gitignore and code extraction changes are purely structural.

  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-1of2
  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-2of2

Reason: Changed surfaces: (1) Monitor library (pathologicaleventlibrary): refactored auth component proxy event matchers — DeploymentUpdated changed from flat cap to window-scoped, new OperatorStatusChanged matcher (cap 30), grace increased 120s→10min, shared eligibleWindows() replaces detection+matcher functions. (2) E2e tests (test/extended/authentication/component_proxy.go): all AuthenticationComponentProxy serial tests now add explicit waitForDeploymentRollout() between proxy/IdP configuration steps; testFallbackOnProxyRemoval adds OIDC login verification after proxy removal. (3) .gitignore: non-functional. Selection rationale: The AuthenticationComponentProxy tests are [Serial][OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy] — they run only in serial job suites. The monitor library matchers are conditionally registered via eligibleWindows(), which returns non-empty only when those serial tests ran and passed. In parallel/non-serial jobs, len(windows) == 0 and no auth matchers are registered, identical to previous behavior. Selecting both serial halves ensures the auth tests are covered regardless of suite split. Not selected (19 jobs): e2e-gcp-ovn, e2e-aws-ovn-fips, e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6, microshift, microshift-serial — catch-all annotation but the changed monitor code path only activates during AuthenticationComponentProxy serial tests; these jobs execute the unchanged len(windows)==0 branch. CSI, Jenkins, image-registry, kubevirt, builds, image-ecosystem, upgrade, upgrade-rollback, two-node-arbiter, two-node-fencing — domain-specific suites with no intersection to auth test or monitor matcher changes. vSphere jobs — ^$ annotation (disabled). No candidate covers non-auth surfaces because the PR changes are entirely within auth test infrastructure. Coverage gap: The e2e test changes and monitor matchers are fully exercised only if the AuthenticationComponentProxy feature gate is enabled in the serial clusters. If it is not, the tests will be skipped and the matchers will not register, but the monitor framework initialization still runs unchanged code paths. Unit tests (passed first stage) extensively cover the refactored matchers.

A few minor comments - other than that this LGTM dependent on successful test runs.

openshift/library-go#2546 has been merged which should fix the test issues.

All AuthenticationComponentProxy tests are failing from the same error

    ClusterOperators did not settle:
clusteroperator/authentication is Degraded for 10m4.392208729s because "ProxyConfigControllerDegraded: applying transport option 3 failed: WithProxyFunc may only be specified once"
    {
s: "ClusterOperators did not settle: \nclusteroperator/authentication is Degraded for 10m4.392208729s because \"ProxyConfigControllerDegraded: applying transport option 3 failed: WithProxyFunc may only be specified once\"",
    }

This change doesn't seem to affect it, but that's simply because previous runs could not get to the new logic here. Once the new logic is seen in test runs, that can give us a better picture of the code changes.

…ats of the same Event

A rollout of oauth-openshift outside the AuthenticationComponentProxy test
windows inherited every occurrence produced inside them and crossed the
default threshold of 20 on its own few occurrences (e.g. the OAuthServer
RequestHeaders IdP serial test after the noProxy proxy test).

OverlapOtherIntervalsPathologicalEventMatcher can now subtract, from
out-of-window repeats, the occurrences that provably happened inside the
allowed intervals.

Shorten the post-test grace from 10 to 5 minutes: the tests now wait
for the rollout to complete, and their last events land before the test
ends.

The serial-1of2 failure (DeploymentUpdated 22 times) is caused because the proxy test brought the count to 16 inside its window, then the unrelated [Feature:OAuthServer] [RequestHeaders] [IdP] test added 6 more rollouts outside it and inherited the whole count.

I pushed a fix for this. Out-of-window repeats now have the occurrences that happened inside the proxy test windows subtracted before being checked against the default threshold of 20 (discountInWindowOccurrences).

Chai test selection for 6fe0d3e12d1036decf8ad87bad40d3eb4bb128fb → main

  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-1of2
  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-serial-2of2

Reason: PR changes two surfaces: (1) serial [OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy] e2e tests now call waitForDeploymentRollout between proxy/IdP configuration steps, and (2) the monitor framework's pathological event evaluation adds OperatorStatusChanged tolerance, discountInWindowOccurrences logic, and increases post-test grace from 120s to 5min. Selected serial-1of2 and serial-2of2 because these are the only jobs that run the [Serial][OCPFeatureGate:AuthenticationComponentProxy] tests, directly exercising both the new rollout waits in component_proxy.go and the refactored monitor framework under real conditions (eligibleWindows, discount logic, all three scoped matchers). Remaining candidates are not selected: - CSI, Jenkins, image-registry, kubevirt, builds, image-ecosystem, two-node-arbiter/fencing, upgrade-rollback: no files match their annotations (no storage/csi/volume, no Jenkins/build, no image/registry, no kubevirt, no edge_topologies, no test/e2e/upgrade changes). - vsphere-ovn, vsphere-ovn-upi: annotation ^$ is never-match by design. - General parallel e2e (fips, gcp-ovn, metal-ipv6): the changed monitor code paths gate on eligibleWindows finding passing AuthenticationComponentProxy tests in finalIntervals; parallel suites don't run those serial tests, so the new code takes the empty/skip branch. The structural refactoring of OverlapOtherIntervalsPathologicalEventMatcher.Allows is backward-compatible: inWindowOccurrences is nil for all existing callers (returning false after the overlap check, identical to old behavior), and allowedIntervalsContaining is a clean extraction of the old inline overlap loop. Unit tests (passing in first-stage) extensively verify both paths. - MicroShift: entirely separate runtime. - GCP upgrade: annotation matches "monitor" in paths but AuthenticationComponentProxy tests don't run during upgrades; same backward-compatibility reasoning for refactored Allows. - .gitignore change (adding mise.toml) is non-functional.
