[Bug]: Remove files from the list of recent items in the move/copy modal #50199
hello hello, usually, in any system, it is not possible to move a file or a folder inside a file (yes, inside a file). But apparently, in Nextcloud, that is possible 🙃
Steps to reproduce
right click on an item, then click copy/move
when the modal appears, select the recent entry in the left menu
wait a bit that it loads
you now have the opportunity to move a folder inside a file 🪄
Expected behavior
Files should not appear in the Recent list

@nextcloud/designers so should we hide files in the filepicker when we copy / move a file?
Or alternative: Allow to overwrite a file if it is a file instead of folder.
@artonge by "filter out" you mean "grey out", right? Cause the "Recent" view in the file picker should have the exact same items as the Recent view in the Files app, so you have a sense of space. (Except the visual greying out of course.)
Files should be filtered out as in removed, not displayed in a muted color. Files cluttering the dialog when what you want to see is folders is what makes the dialog itself unusable and is the very core of this issue.
@jancborchardt I think you are missing the fact that the very first action triggering this issue is a copy/move command. As you can't move or copy something into a file (unless you know a magic trick 😛 🪄 ), it makes no sense to display files in the UI.
In every "Move" or "Copy" or "Save as" dialog on normal operating systems you will also see files next to folders.
Files showing (of course greyed out here) gives you important context that you are in the right folder, and also assures you that your files are still there.

I agree that we should hide the files, nice catch @maximelehericy
We should also grey them out in the other lists

21 remaining items

This does not work. You can also pick other files (different purpose).
I think in recent we can the mime filter to hide them instead of grey out if they are files.

To be more explicit, we can filter out nodes if
canPick(node)isfalse. That should be ok no matter the purpose.jancborchardt commentedon Dec 2, 2025

I do agree btw that the "Recent" view has too much noise, as in files and folders from other people. But fixing that is a separate issue.

So I checked it on our instance and recents is really quite bad. I don’t even see folders cause there is so much noise.
Again, I would say the real problem here is that "Recents" is way overfilled and we should tackle to make it more relevant to oneself, FYI @sorbaugh
But yeah probably it’s a good quick fix to not show files specifically in the recent view of the move/copy modal.
