Description
Steps to reproduce
- Create a calendar and create an event in the past.
- Subscribe to a public ICS calendar that uses similarly named events, but for the current month.
- Search for an event name that is common in both calendars.
Expected behaviour
The search results should be sorted by date, starting from today.
Actual behaviour
2012 events from the nextcloud calendar are sorted before 2020 events from the subscribed calendar.

Can you please triage @tcitworld or @georgehrke ?
@despens please fix typo in title: evens -> events
Can confirm for Nextcloud 21.0.1.1 calendar 2.2.0
IMO this is a severe UX bug. Search is unusable if it starts listing past events from years ago first. My suggestion is that it starts listing events from 2 weeks ago (if any), continuing until today and into the future. For older events there should be a button "search in past events" or a more comprehensive search later.

Here is an example of a search: There are more recent events whose title matches the keyword.

Moving the issue in server since the search is handled here.
Seems a sane default, but how to tell the user we're doing this choice, and allowing to search in past events. A simple filter? Opinions @nextcloud/designers @nextcloud/calendar ?
jkpirie commentedon Jul 21, 2022
May I respectfully ask whether this issue is still active and being worked on please? I know I got in trouble for asking this question without using a template but I am not a developer or experienced at using Github but I do think this is a serious issue and makes my full time use of the calendar app impossible.
Thanks you very much for any information you could provide.

@tcitworld
IMO: the pop-up search window in the top right isn't and will never be a full-blown search, and should not have additional filters/buttons. It should have sane defaults, like the one proposed.
What is also needed is a proper, fullscreen search interface, where you can filter and sort using all kinds of properties (e.g. include/exclude results from certain apps, and have a full-blown event search with all kinds of options, like date range).
I personally never use Nextcloud search for events because it never gets the results I want, I use the search on my smartphone (!!) which has my calendars synced (app: business calendar 2). For files I use the search on local machine, because there I can sort results by last modified etc.

Me also.
Nextcloud 25.0.3
Calendar4.2.1
Search on a term in my calendar which has many entries, past and present and the initial list was:
July 2023
May 2022
Oct 2019
Dec 2022
Oct 2020
This simply doesn't make sense chroologically.
That same search term in my Fastmail calendar lists all instances of that term (Day off) in perfectly formatted chronological order in the right hand search bar. One can also scroll backwards to previous entries and choose to go further back or forward by clicking on a "search before " button.
Fastmail really have the search thing nailed and, because of this, I am reluctant to cut them loose just yet :)
Nextcloud can be as good, and better and is already better at some tasks. We will get there :)

Please react with 👍 to the first post to show that you want this. This is the recommended way in all Nextcloud repositories.
