Nemo breaks thumbnails for Jpeg XL files #3562

Closed

Description

@mruncreative

Distribution

Mint 22.1

Package version

nemo 6.4.5

Frequency

Always

Bug description

Nemo not only fails to generate files for .jxl but actively breaks them in a way Pix will be unable to create or display thumbnails for them.
If first viewed with Pix the thumbnails generate fine inside of Pix and display correctly in Nemo afterwards too but if you refresh a couple times with F5 Nemo will attempt to update the thumbnails and the same situation will occur.

Steps to reproduce

See description

Expected behavior

Succeed at generating thumbnails for jxl files

    I already mentioned it here: linuxmint/xviewer#162
    but it's not really related to xviewer at all.

    Nemo uses gdk-pixbuf to process jxl images.
    jxl support is provided by the jxl-pixbuf-loader package, linuxmints base might be too old to include it.

    Why does it work for you? Developer build? Other OS?
    Are you saying it will fix itself with the next full release?

    It works for me because I have jxl pixbuf loader installed.

    $ rpm -qa jxl-pixbuf-loader nemo
    jxl-pixbuf-loader-0.11.1-2.fc42.x86_64
    nemo-6.4.5-1.fc42.x86_64

    Can I even install that on Mint? Don't know how to with apt. I only have xapp-jxl-thumbnailer here.

    I discovered that certain Jxl files DO thumbnail SOMETIMES (particularly those generated by gimp 2.10 as opposed to gimp 3).
    If you export an 8 bit image with GIMP 2 it will import as 8 bit and if exported with GIMP 3 it will import as 32-bit floating point. Maybe that has something to do with it.
    But maybe GIMP was generating the thumbnails. Anyway here's what Nemo puts out when trying to thumbnail jxl files:

    ./lib/extras/enc/encode.cc:62: JXL_FAILURE: Bit depth does not fit pixel data type
    ./lib/extras/enc/apng.cc:201: JXL_RETURN_IF_ERROR code=1: VerifyPackedImage(frame.color, ppf.info)
    Encode failed
    Could not generate thumbnail for '/home/a.jxl': Command '['djxl', '--bits_per_sample', '16', '--num_threads', '1', '--quiet', '/home/a.jxl', '/dev/shm/tmpmz4dbg1g.png']' returned non-zero exit status 1.

    File the issue against the jxl package or their github, it's their issue.

    @iateyourgranny

    I found a fix by changing 16 bits per sample to 8 in /usr/bin/xapp-jxl-thumbnailer
    "djxl", "--bits_per_sample", "8", "--num_threads", "1", "--quiet", t.args.input, tempf.name
