func invoke currently only works for HTTP functions. Add support for invoking Kafka functions by producing a test message to the configured topic. The CLI should read KAFKA_BROKERS and KAFKA_TOPICS from func.yaml and send a message.
Hi team! @aliok
I'm interested in working on this issue. I see it's blocked by knative-extensions/func-go#176 (Kafka middleware producing support).
A few questions before I start:
Approach: Would it be acceptable to implement a CLI-only solution that directly uses a Kafka producer library (like Sarama or Franz-go) for func invoke? This would:
Provide immediate value for testing Kafka functions
Work independently of the middleware
Could be refactored later when func-go#176 lands
Alternative: Would it be more helpful if I contributed to unblocking func-go#176 first by implementing one of the proposed producing approaches there?
Library preference: What's the preferred Kafka client library for this project? I see Sarama and Franz-go are popular options.
I'm happy to work on either approach - just want to align with the project's direction and priorities. Let me know which path makes more sense!
