The Python "twisted" library is callback-based, popular, part of the standard installation, and a good match. I added an optional callback argument to general() and we can switch sync/async based on its presence
Update: the async stuff is implemented through the getdns extensions but the caller is still blocking until the callback returns (I forgot to fix this before today). Users have requested exposing the file descriptor interface so this is going to be redesigned, anyway.
Done but needs a little more test. This may be worth writing up, as there's basically nothing out there on how to do this sort of thing in Python modules written in C.
