Support firebase v12

firebase 12.0.0 was recently released:

AngularFire 20.0.1 is not compatible with it; produces compilation errors such as:

Alternative to @angular/fire for Angular 22+ and Native Firebase JS SDK 12+

Like many of you, our team faced significant roadblocks when upgrading our production projects to Angular 22+ and the latest Firebase JS SDK v12+ due to the current maintenance status and delayed updates of @angular/fire.

Instead of waiting, we decided to build and publish a lightweight, zoneless-friendly, and modern alternative: ngx-firebase.

Thanks for raising this, and for the compile-error detail.

The v21 line is the one that targets firebase 12. It is currently available as 21.0.0-rc.0 on npm's next tag (npm latest is still 20.0.1), so it is a release candidate for testing rather than a finished release. You can try it with:

npm i @angular/fire@next

which peers @angular/core ^21 and depends on firebase ^12.4.0.

I want to be upfront about one thing, since it bit people on this rc. When 21.0.0-rc.0 first went out, it pulled in a version of rxfire (the library AngularFire uses internally) that did not yet accept firebase 12, so npm installed a second copy of firebase 11 next to firebase 12 and the app crashed on the first Firestore read. That is fixed now that rxfire 6.2.0 (which accepts firebase 12) has shipped, so a fresh install of @angular/fire@next today resolves the corrected rxfire and gives you a single firebase 12. If you are upgrading an existing project rather than installing clean, run npm ls rxfire firebase and make sure you get one firebase and rxfire 6.2.0 or newer; a stale lockfile can still pin the older rxfire.

A second heads-up on install: 21.0.0-rc.0 still carries an unused @angular/platform-browser-dynamic peer (issue #3667), so on Angular 21 you may need npm i @angular/fire@next --legacy-peer-deps (especially if your app is not on the very latest 21.x patch) until the fix for that (#3718) ships in the next rc.

The reason the current released line cannot just be pointed at firebase 12 is that @angular/fire@20.0.1 depends on firebase ^11.8.0; installing firebase 12 in the app leaves two copies of the @firebase/* packages in the tree, which is the type-mismatch you saw. Moving to the line that itself depends on firebase 12 is what resolves it.

If you try @angular/fire@next and hit something specific, please open a new issue or comment here with the detail. Being a release candidate, it is still stabilizing, so concrete reports are genuinely helpful.
