chore(i18n): sweep dead locale keys (AST-gated) - #2263
Removes 330 dead i18n keys (230 webview / 100 src) from all 18 locale files, plus one call-site fix found by the sweep.
2066 keys → 330 deleted → 1736 remain. Of the ~469 measured candidates, 137 were refuted as live by the static analysis and kept.
No behaviour change from the deletions: the diff is locale data, every surviving key/value is byte-identical, and the i18n CI leg stays green.
Method — AST, not grep-only
A throwaway static analyser walked 2251 tracked source files with the TypeScript compiler API (no regex matching) and resolved every reference form the repo actually uses:
Form
Handling
t("ns:path"), t("path")
literal; bare keys marked live in every matching namespace
t(\ns:prefix.${x}`), t(`prefix.${x}`)`
literal prefix extracted → whole family marked live
<Trans i18nKey="…">, <Trans i18nKey={expr}>
literal + expression resolution
i18n.exists("…")
literal (ChatRow.tsx:1157)
key in const/let, ternary, ||, ??, + concat
expanded
same-file function return (validateName() → t(nameError))
Namespace resolution follows the repo's own scripts/find-missing-i18n-key.js semantics (split on the first :, join the remainder with .).
A key is deleted only when all hold: zero static reference, no dynamic-family prefix match, no plural/ordinal variant usage, and zero namespace-qualified raw-string mention (ns:path or ns.path, identifier-boundary matched) across all tracked sources — including tests, snapshots, .md and .yml. Anything uncertain stays.
The two excluded dynamic families — re-verified on current main
Both are also detected independently by the template-literal pass, so the exclusion is enforced by the tool rather than a manual allowlist.

Landing 30% under the approximation is the expected direction: the approximation counted keys that resolve as live through template-literal families, bare-key namespace resolution, config-object property flow, and same-file function returns.
Per namespace: chat 50, common 19, marketplace 52, mcp 1, prompts 9, settings 89, welcome 1, worktrees 9 (webview); common 55, embeddings 7, marketplace 25, mcp 7, tools 6 (src).
Notable orphaned subtrees removed: webview/marketplace:sources.* (23, UI no longer exists), webview/settings:advanced.diff.* (9), webview/chat:slashCommands.* (11, the live copies are under settings:), core/marketplace:item-card.*/type-group.*/filters.* (25, leftover copy of the webview namespace).
The vitest-probe trap — disclosure
An earlier PR in this program shipped a "confirmed bug" (the double-colon key common:errors:command_timeout) that was falsified: the probe ran under vitest, where src/i18n/setup.ts gates resource loading on NODE_ENV === "test", so t() returns raw keys and nothing is observable.
This PR contains no runtime-probe evidence. Every deadness claim is static.
The double-colon "bug" is not a bug. i18next 25.10.10 extractFromKey splits on the namespace separator, shifts the namespace, then rejoins the remainder with the key separator — so common:errors:command_timeout resolves exactly like common:errors.command_timeout. A live instance probe in the webview package confirms both return the same string. That key is live and was not deleted; the FINAL-PLAN "BONUS REAL BUG" item is retired as falsified.
One candidate kept, one real bug fixed
webview/chat:commandExecution.exitStatus was in the dead list. Its only call site (CommandExecution.tsx:200) used the dot formt("chat.commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitStatus }), which the AST correctly classified as a non-reference — i18next only splits namespaces on :, so it misses and renders the raw key to the user.
Deleting the key would have made that bug permanent. Instead: key kept, call site fixed to t("chat:commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitCode }). The interpolation variable also did not match the resource ({{exitCode}} vs the passed exitStatus), so even a resolved lookup would have printed the placeholder. Two-case regression test added.

Round-trip proof (the anti-live-deletion gate): for all 234 modified locale files, compared HEAD~2 vs HEAD key-by-key — keys deleted that were not on the dead list: 0; surviving keys lost: 0; surviving values changed: 0; unexpected additions: 0.
Mutation budget:scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:75 limits SOURCE_EXTENSIONS to {.js,.jsx,.mjs,.cjs,.ts,.tsx} and packageForPath() returns undefined for anything else, so the 234 locale .json files contribute 0 changed executable lines and 0 mutants. The only executable change is the one-line t() call (specs are filtered out), so this PR uses ~1 of the 500-line / 400-mutant budget. The 8212 deleted lines are all non-executable data.
Hygiene
Three commits, one concern each: webview locale data, src locale data, the call-site fix. No changeset, no CHANGELOG.md edit. Pushed to myk1yt only.
Known pre-existing conditions (not caused here)
pnpm format:check is already red on main (2796 files), including 288 locale files. This PR does not reformat unrelated files.
58 locale-files carry keys absent from en; identical count before and after this change.
What: remove 230 unreferenced keys from webview-ui/src/i18n/locales across
all 18 locales (chat 50, common 19, marketplace 52, mcp 1, prompts 9,
settings 89, welcome 1, worktrees 9).
Why: these keys have no consumer. Verified with a static AST pass over
2251 tracked source files resolving t(), <Trans i18nKey>, i18n.exists,
template-literal families, plural/ordinal variants, same-file function
returns, useState setter flow and config-object property flow. Each key
also has zero namespace-qualified raw-string mention in tracked sources.
Impact: no behaviour change. Locale data only; the i18n CI leg
(scripts/find-missing-translations.js) stays green and every surviving
key/value is byte-identical (round-trip checked across all 144 files).
What: remove 100 unreferenced keys from src/i18n/locales across all 18
locales (common 55, embeddings 7, marketplace 25, mcp 7, tools 6).
Why: same static AST evidence as the webview half. Notable orphaned
subtrees: core/marketplace:item-card.* / type-group.* / filters.* (25) is
a leftover copy of the webview marketplace namespace whose only src-side
consumer is MarketplaceManager's installation.* toasts, and
core/common:extension.* duplicates src/package.nls.json (a separate
localization system, untouched).
Impact: no behaviour change. Locale data only; the i18n CI leg stays
green and every surviving key/value is byte-identical.
What: CommandExecution.tsx:200 called t("chat.commandExecution.exitStatus",
{ exitStatus }) — a dot-form key. i18next only splits a namespace on ":",
so it looks for a "chat.commandExecution.exitStatus" key inside the default
namespace, misses, and renders the raw key string in the tooltip. Changed to
t("chat:commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitCode }) and added a two-case
regression test.
Why: found while sweeping dead i18n keys. The AST pass correctly classified
the dot form as a non-reference, which made the underlying key look dead and
would have led to deleting a key that the UI needs. The key is live; the call
site was the bug. The interpolation variable also did not match the resource
("{{exitCode}}" vs the passed exitStatus), so even a resolved lookup would
have printed the literal placeholder.
Impact: the exit-status tooltip now shows "Exited with status 0" instead of
"chat.commandExecution.exitStatus". No other behaviour change.

Localization
Updated translations across supported languages in settings, marketplace, chat, prompts, worktrees, and other interface areas.
Removed a number of labels, descriptions, and messages that are no longer represented in the interface; some text may be unavailable in certain languages.
Revised selected settings and task-related translations.
Bug Fixes
Corrected the command-exit tooltip so it displays the exit code.
Added coverage to verify command-status display and translated tooltip text.
The pull request revises translation catalogs across application and webview locales. It adds ESLint and CI checks for translation-key syntax and interpolation variables. It also updates the command-execution exit-status tooltip and adds a test for the translated output.
ESLint checks for dot-form namespaced translation keys. A new script checks interpolation options against English resource placeholders, and CI runs the script.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2289 — The PR adds translation checks and CI wiring, which overlaps with the issue’s translation-check objective. Its cancellation and build-removal requirements are not covered by the supplied change summary.

Explanation
The description is detailed and directly explains the changes, analysis method, risks, test results, and known pre-existing failures. It does not include the required approved issue link or the checklist sections from the template.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. The runtime change only corrects an i18n key and passes the schema-validated numeric exit code to a tooltip. The new interpolation checker uses fixed Git arguments and reads repository locale/source files; it does not execute source, expose secrets, or alter approval and allowlist behavior. The locale diff contains only key deletions, with no surviving value changes or additions.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The diff changes locale JSON, lint/interpolation checks, CI configuration, tests, and one tooltip translation call. The runtime change only replaces the i18n key and interpolation name in CommandExecution.tsx; it does not add or alter state writes, storage operations, atomicity, rollback, or default propagation. Therefore the stated persistence failure conditions are not introduced.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work. The only production component change updates the t() key and interpolation name in CommandExecution.tsx; useEvent, the status cache, and abort handling are identical in base and head. The added checker and ESLint helper use synchronous file/process reads and add no listeners, watchers, timers, subscriptions, or providers. The new test removes its i18next resource bundle in afterAll.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The PR changes the visible exited-command hover tooltip in webview-ui/src/components/chat/CommandExecution.tsx to use chat:commandExecution.exitStatus and interpolate exitCode. The added CommandExecution.spec.tsx test covers the rendered text, but the current PR diff contains no *.visual.tsx test or __screenshots__ baseline for this hover state. webview-ui/AGENTS.md explicitly requires a Playwright snapshot for user-noticeable hover states.
Resolution
Add a Playwright component-gallery test for the exited CommandExecution tooltip. Use deterministic English i18n, render an exited command with a fixed exit code, hover the status dot, assert the screenshot, and commit the container-generated __screenshots__ baseline.

What: add a CommandExecution render test that drives the exited branch and
asserts the hovered tooltip reads "Exited with status 7", and hoist the
sendStatusMessage helper so both describes share it.
Why: the two existing tooltip tests build a standalone i18next instance and
assert catalog strings, so they kept passing when the component used the
dot-form key or dropped the exitCode interpolation.
Impact: the exit-status tooltip regression is now pinned at the component
layer; the catalog assertions remain as a locale-entry check.
What: remove 12 unreferenced keys from the core (extension-side)
marketplace namespace across all 18 locales: filters.search.placeholder,
filters.type.{mode,mcpServer}, filters.tags.{label,clear,placeholder,
noResults,selected}, filters.installed.{all,installed,notInstalled},
items.empty.noItems.
Why: these keys have no consumer in their own i18next instance. The
extension loads src/i18n/locales and the webview loads
webview-ui/src/i18n/locales as two separate i18next instances, and the
only references to these paths live in webview-ui components, which
resolve against the webview bundle. The core copies are leftovers from
when the marketplace UI shared one bundle; five of the twelve had already
drifted from the live webview values. The 6 installation.* keys, which
MarketplaceManager.ts actually calls, are untouched.
Impact: no behaviour change. Locale data only, pure deletions (0
insertions). Every surviving key/value is byte-identical and key-presence
parity holds across all 18 locales; find-missing-translations.js stays
green.
Add a lint test that uses the composed src config for an API file.
The factory test builds its own config from the TypeScript parser and createI18nDotKeyConfig. It never loads src/eslint.config.mjs. The package test script runs only the three packages/config-eslint test files, so none of them exercises the src config.
In src/eslint.config.mjs, the block at lines 41-49 spreads apiProviderHygieneConfig, which applies to api/**/*.ts, and replaces its no-restricted-syntax rule. Line 46 re-adds the dot-key selectors. If that line is removed, dot-form keys such as t("chat.foo") in API files would stop reporting, and no current test would fail. The current configuration includes the selectors, so this adds regression coverage for working behavior.
Suggested test direction
Lint one sample file under api/ (for example, api/example.ts) with the composed src/eslint.config.mjs array. Assert that a dot-form t(...) call reports the dot-key message. Place the test in the src test suite, where the composed config is in scope, and keep the sample filename within the api/**/*.ts pattern.

Check t() calls that pass no options.

Check t() calls that pass no options.
The checker skips t("ns:key") calls that have no second argument. It checks only calls whose second argument is an object literal. A future call with no options can therefore pass CI even when its English string needs a variable such as {{exitCode}}. No current call hits this case, so the risk applies to future code.

Update the t() call check around isT and optionsArg so calls with no second
argument are still validated against required interpolations, treating absent
options as supplying none. Preserve validation for object-literal options and
continue skipping option objects with spread assignments; handle absent options
safely when collecting supplied properties.

Review comments at @scripts/check-i18n-interpolation.js:
- Line 7: Update the checker’s header comment to state that only calls with a
string-literal key and an object-literal second argument are checked; do not
change the argument-handling gate.
- Line 33: Update the namespace validation guard in getResource to accept dots
in namespace names while continuing to reject path separators, so interpolation
checks run for dotted namespace files.

Summary
Removes 330 dead i18n keys (230 webview / 100 src) from all 18 locale files, plus one call-site fix found by the sweep.
2066 keys → 330 deleted → 1736 remain. Of the ~469 measured candidates, 137 were refuted as live by the static analysis and kept.No behaviour change from the deletions: the diff is locale data, every surviving key/value is byte-identical, and the i18n CI leg stays green.
Method — AST, not grep-only
A throwaway static analyser walked 2251 tracked source files with the TypeScript compiler API (no regex matching) and resolved every reference form the repo actually uses:
t("ns:path"),t("path")t(\ns:prefix.${x}`),t(`prefix.${x}`)`<Trans i18nKey="…">,<Trans i18nKey={expr}>i18n.exists("…")const/let, ternary,||,??,+concatvalidateName() → t(nameError))useStatesetter flow (setNameError(validateX(...)))t(setting.labelKey))*Keyfallbackt()across files (requireSetting(v, "embeddings:…"))_one/_other/_ordinal_*)Namespace resolution follows the repo's own
scripts/find-missing-i18n-key.jssemantics (split on the first:, join the remainder with.).A key is deleted only when all hold: zero static reference, no dynamic-family prefix match, no plural/ordinal variant usage, and zero namespace-qualified raw-string mention (
ns:pathorns.path, identifier-boundary matched) across all tracked sources — including tests, snapshots,.mdand.yml. Anything uncertain stays. The two excluded dynamic families — re-verified on current main

Candidates → dead reconciliation
enatorigin/mainLanding 30% under the approximation is the expected direction: the approximation counted keys that resolve as live through template-literal families, bare-key namespace resolution, config-object property flow, and same-file function returns.
Per namespace: chat 50, common 19, marketplace 52, mcp 1, prompts 9, settings 89, welcome 1, worktrees 9 (webview); common 55, embeddings 7, marketplace 25, mcp 7, tools 6 (src).
Notable orphaned subtrees removed:
webview/marketplace:sources.*(23, UI no longer exists),webview/settings:advanced.diff.*(9),webview/chat:slashCommands.*(11, the live copies are undersettings:),core/marketplace:item-card.*/type-group.*/filters.*(25, leftover copy of the webview namespace). The vitest-probe trap — disclosure
An earlier PR in this program shipped a "confirmed bug" (the double-colon key
common:errors:command_timeout) that was falsified: the probe ran under vitest, wheresrc/i18n/setup.tsgates resource loading onNODE_ENV === "test", sot()returns raw keys and nothing is observable. This PR contains no runtime-probe evidence. Every deadness claim is static.
The double-colon "bug" is not a bug. i18next 25.10.10
extractFromKeysplits on the namespace separator, shifts the namespace, then rejoins the remainder with the key separator — socommon:errors:command_timeoutresolves exactly likecommon:errors.command_timeout. A live instance probe in the webview package confirms both return the same string. That key is live and was not deleted; the FINAL-PLAN "BONUS REAL BUG" item is retired as falsified. One candidate kept, one real bug fixed
webview/chat:commandExecution.exitStatuswas in the dead list. Its only call site (CommandExecution.tsx:200) used the dot formt("chat.commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitStatus }), which the AST correctly classified as a non-reference — i18next only splits namespaces on:, so it misses and renders the raw key to the user.Deleting the key would have made that bug permanent. Instead: key kept, call site fixed to
t("chat:commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitCode }). The interpolation variable also did not match the resource ({{exitCode}}vs the passedexitStatus), so even a resolved lookup would have printed the placeholder. Two-case regression test added.Verification
