get rid of c++ exceptions and dynamic casts to allow no-rtti builds
most of dynamic_casts can be replaced by static_cast but some might requre some
custom solution...

    why are no-rtti builds desirable? getting rid of exceptions would require API breaks that are a pretty high cost
